Managed to get UFO : Enemy unknown (a.k.a. XCOM UFO Defense) to run with MIDI and wave sounds on XP... but it hangs when I click my base location on the geoscape.

Anyone know a solution, or shall I concede that the game is jolly well ten years old ?

System :

Athlon 1200 Mhz
Asus A7V133, no onboard audio
SbLive Platinum
Ethernet card
Asus 8200 deluxe geforce3 AGP card
640MB PC133 SDRAM
Windows XP installed with ACPI enabled

Batch file and all .exe files told to run in windows '95 compatability mode. The intro music and sounds do work.

That's a fantastic game! :)

I didn't have much luck getting it to run; though if you got the sound working (properly) you faired better than I did. The sound/music tended to stop suddenly for me.

The biggest problem, in my experience, was that it ran too fast (I have an Athlon 700). It was difficult to navigate the globe because it would turn so quickly. And days would pass by the dozen unless the timer was set to 5second. The radar stations seemed to work improperly too...years would go by without detecting a UFO.

I did find an application to "slow down" your CPU. It's called, terrifyingly, 'CPUKiller'. It'll simulate a CPU up to 98% slower. I haven't tried it, but it might work. CPUKiller

Good Luck,
Russ

Why not use a second box (with Win98/DOS or something) or *gasp* dualboot to play this game and save you the headache of trying to find out that Windows XP is not fully backwards compatible with DOS?

Just my $ 0.02

Fair comment, but I can't be arsed. So, there you have it, the correct solution is one I haven't got the inclination to try, you're right. It's fun to see how far we get though; The CPUkiller trial has not helped with XCom 1, but Terror From The Deep is running now, and seems playable with a 5% slowdown... It crashes when I click on the end of turn during a mission, I'll let y'all know how I get on, this is fun...:)

I'm too scared to try to run it on my main XP system...X-Com scrolls way too fast even on my P150 notebook! Maybe I'll give it a try sometime though ;)
