Nose Bleeds

i recently started getting random nose bleeds... i'll be a bit sniffly or blow my nose and blood will just start coming out the right nostril... kind of gross but it's more annoying than anything else (esp. when it happens in a restaurant).

i had this same issue 4 years ago and my guess is that it's the result of the air becoming cold/dry, which i guess dries out my nose and causes capillaries to break...

anyone else have this? and, other than getting a humidifier for my room, any good advice for how to prevent/reduce these?

Vaseline? Though I'm not sure it's supposed to go in your nostrils... EDIT: I hear nasal irrigation helps with dry noses. Search for it on wikipedia.

stop picking your nose.
apply a small amount of vaseline to your nasal septum.
run a humidifier in your house/bedroom.

I get them every once in a while. I try to run a humidifier at night and use moisturizing tissues (not sure if that actually helps or not). I've never tried the vaseline under the nose.

Get a warm air humidifier to combat the dryness at your place. Do not get the cold ones (warm ones warm up the water and creates a warm myst).

Good advice. Use a Q-Tip to apply the Vaseline 😉

this and also the moisturizing nasal sprays help out a bit.

my wife usually gets them in the summer when it is 115F+ and like 5% humidity - we hate humidity so i am not putting a humidifier in the room, so the vaseline at night does the trick the best with the moisturizing nasal spray throughout the day.

If vasoline doesn't do the trick, go to a doctor. You may have a leaky vein up there. It may sound painful, but they can cotterize it and stop the bleeding for good if it's continuing to rupture.

That's generally the cause. I used to have this problem frequently and in great quantity (I used to wake up in a large pool of my own blood). I went to a doctor and he cauterized the capillary. Now i have this problem VERY rarely, only if it's especially dry and I decide to go nose spelunking. It's a slightly painful but very quick (5 seconds) procedure. A couple of days later, you blow out the nastiest looking booger in the world. After that, you're good to go.

My uncle had that done and it stopped his chronic nose bleeds. He said it really didn't hurt all that much

I had a similar issue for a while but seem to have grown out of it. I had good luck with nasal irrigation as well

Humidifier, vaseline on finger and insert in nose if it's bad enough, and when you're outside and it's freezing (and thus air is very dry), wrap your scarf loosely around your face from nose down to keep down the moisture loss from your airway.
