Ever seen what happens when you take sugar, oxidizer, powdered magnesium and blow it up?

The sugar is the gas. The oxidizer is the N2O. The powdered magnesium is the little bits of car kibble that will be flying everywhere.

Most of the time what causes a head to come off is either weak head bolts, improperly installed heads, or over revving the engine which causes the rod to stretch, and the piston hits the cylinder head... happens quite frequently on top fuel cars as they cross the finish line.

*EDIT* Hotter does not equal more power... the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio is 14.7:1... that's the most efficient, most complete burn... however, the most power is made closer to 12:1

You're right about the air/fuel ratio, I got myself mixed up on this fine monday morning 🙂

As far as blowing the head off, we're talking about kids playing with a typical 4 banger
factory engine. Not having the NO2 setup correctly or having a malfunction can certainly
pop the head loose on one of these engines. Especially considering that some of these
people are using much larger shots than they should be.

It'll blow a head gasket before it blows the head off... they use composit gaskets most of the time... top fuel uses some sort of copper alloy I believe... with I think titanium rings around each cylinder bore.

Most people put the bottles in the back of the trunk. If a car accident causes damage that far in, the gas tank is hit and you're screwed either way.

Gas tanks don't explode without sparks... a bottle of N2O will because it's under very high pressure. Like when you put water and dry ice in a plastic bottle and cap it. Only an N2O bottle needs an impact to break the bottle.

i was thinking, wouldn't it be good then to actually put the n2o bottle in the front seat like they had it in the rx7 in tfaf? it's accessible without getting out of the car, not in the trunk, and in a concealed area where cops won't exactly see it right away when they see your car...

but i mean, there's gotta be a better place to put it than in the trunk where it's not accessible... i mean, to open the bottle you'd have to get out of the car, open the bottle, get back in the car, and that seems like a big hassle (ionno, i'm not a nitrous user, never looked into the stuff)... there's gotta be an easier way/location

It's not meant to be used when you want to pass someone on the expressway... it's meant to be used in race only applications. And because of the nature of a N2O system, it cannot be DOT approved, that's why it's illegal.

*EDIT* Any company that advertises DOT approved N2O bottles is a fraud.

BTW slikmunks... are the apex seals on the rotary engines as bad as they say they are? I've never worked with an RX-7 before... but a friend of mine has replaced apex seals in his turbocharged RX-7 6 times in the last 3 years. I've been told they mainly go bad due to overheating... but he's pretty smart about stuff like that... doesn't abuse it either.

It doesn't matter what kind of valve is on them, if you crack a bottle it's going to explode whether it has a "special" valve or not.
