Hey, my friend got a special offer that came with Norton Antivirus 2004, he didn't need it so he gave it to me, now i'm wondering, should I download another antivirus oor should I use Norton? If so what should I download? What would be a good firewall to go with the antivirus?

I always used symantec's products, but in my experience it slows down my system a lot. Im using Trendmicro Internet Security and it's been working good so far. It detected a couple of viruses that norton didn't pick up. They have a trial on trendmicro's website.

So I should use Anti Vir instead of Norton? And sygate as a firewall?

I'm using Panda Platinum 7 right now, and so far I have been very impressed with it. It has a included Firewall.

i think panda uses sygate if im not mistaken. but according to the tests, antivir has a great detection rate for being free, but you should really look at how it performs when compared to symantec's norton antivirus, just check the link to spywareinfo out, Confusednewbie1552

Use Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2004 Internet Security! It's a really neat program, for 50$ retail price, you get Anti-Virus, Firewall, eMail Spam Blocker, and their cool Real-Time Scanning and Emergency Internet Lock features! What's really great is that the firewall isn't restricting when you play games, like some brands are, and also, it doesn't take hostage of your computer like norton does.

Here's the real kicker, I know that I said it was $50 retail, but if you own ANY microsoft software, which I'm sure that you do, you can go here: http://www.trendmicro.com/en/p...llin/buy/microsoft.htm
and get the whole program for only $29.95 -- it has everything that norton internet security has, but it's (in my opinion) better, and cheaper!

Hmm, it looks like norton is good enough, I hear that it is a huge resource hog, but is it really noticeable? It looks like Sygate has the best firewall, so I'll go with them.

depends on your system, used about 35 mb on mine, compared to about 12mb or so with antivir

It does depend on your system... but again I stress, PC-Cillin takes up virtually NO memory =D Currently taking up less than 20MB.

What kind of offer did your friend get the copy of Norton AV with? It's possible that the copy will only let you update for 90 days or so.

Personally, I can't stand Norton/Symantec products. I like being able to disable and close software when I need to without having to jump through multiple hoops.

Norton 2005 puts 10 services and 2 items in the startup group. ;)

As far as free AV applications, Panda Platinum includes 1yr. of updates, and it shares a similar scanning engine as the one found in the Titanium version. According to the SWI test, Panda Titanium scored roughly 91% on the detection rate (compared to Antivir's 85%). Another nice feature that Panda Platinum offers is a built-in Firewall (Sygate). ;)

Since it's for "IT Professionals " they want to speak with your company about becoming a Panda reseller. ;)

Well, I used to have norton installed on my computer, more precisely the Norton Internet Security 2003 (AV, FW, ...)

My opinion at the time, was that it was a pretty good software, that protected my pc. There was not a simgle email that came with a virus without norton to step on first to clean up the mess.

About the firewall, it seemed to be a pretty good piece of software by itself.

The subscription was for a year, and so I had to upgrade after that, maybe to NIS2004 ... but instead of just going out there and buy a licence, I posted on AT at this thread. You can check the replies I had, and maybe you'll change your mind about norton ... it's not that bad of a product, but you have many alternatives around, as good or even better than norton.

Personally, I went with the Panda Platinum 7. It has AV and built in Firewall.

I would prefer to use Kerio Personal Firewall, but after installing it didn't work quite well ... no problem with the kerio itself, but some other software (probably panda) was keeping it from working as it should.

Rest assured, on next re-format, I'll start with Kerio from beginning ... then probably panda just for AV (not firewall).

When you install the panda, you have the option not to install firewall, so you can use another one around ...

I have used a number of different antivirus and personal firewall proggies. They are all basiclly the same. Just keep your antivirus defs up to date and you will be fine. The "performance hit" we are talking about is small at most 5% on a modern system (e.g. 2 Ghz P4, 512 MB RAM....).

I'm using Norton Antivirus 2005 now, not feeling any more "sluggish" than 2002 that I was using before. (Running a decent machine though, AXP @ 2 g, 1 gig ram). Tried out Panda Titanium 2004 for a bit and liked it, but it was causing "Document contains no data" errors in Mozilla and Firefox.

Well, I've registered the free Panda (link on previous message) without giving that kind of info ... and I'm receiving AV updates everyday, so you be able to do that too.
