I was downloading on Kazaa... and BOOM , pops up

not sure, but i think it was a 311 song...

boy am i happy i quartined that sucker...

Wow. You earned a cookie! 😛 Viruses are about as comon as cookies on Kazaa anyway... Just a friendly reminder to always scan your downloads!

well out of the 5 gigs i have downloaded on Kazaa.. thats the first one that popped up, thats why i was so suprised... plus.. the love letter virus is a pretty serious one isn't it?
 
I've downloaded dozens of gigs off KaZaA and never gotten a virus off it. WTF do you download to get viruses? Do you purposely download porn files labeled as ".EXE" thinking it could actually have a self-extracting archive containing gigs of pr0n? HA!

I believe as long as you're downloading mpegs, jpegs, zips and mp3s, you're ok. And if you DL any EXEs, scan them before running, or try opening them with an archiver to see if it's an archive.

BTW I run Norton also just in case...

I guess Norton 2002 is OK with XP.

The file may have been labeled .mp3, but it probably was a script with a LOT of blank padding to give the impression it was a real music file. I guess they also managed to insert an MP3 header so that Kazaa could report the time/bitrate correctly.

Check your extension. It was most likely .exe.vbs.
 
If it is a virus with a .MP3 extension, how can that hurt? MP3 files are associated with an application, the application tries to interpret the file as MP3 format, and fails. It's not as if the application will decide to run the MP3 as an executable because it doesn't find music.

Cranky, it can't hurt it. MP3's are played in such a way that should the data be unplayable(too many "bad" bits via CRC), the player just stops playing altogether. I suppose a buffer overflow is possible, but that would be hard to do considering that there's no limit on the size of an MP3, and players won't go past 320 usually.
