OK if you don't experience with NIS2009 then DON'T reply to this thread. It just irks me people who say norton is bloatware or something like that because NIS 2009 is definitely not bloatware. NIS 2009 was written from the ground up and is very light weight.

With that being said for those of you who used it what do you think? I'm running a trial on windows 7 and so far it seems pretty good. The updates come even faster than kaspersky i think now and it really doesn't zap any performance out of yoru system (i'm running windows 7 along with NIS in a virtual machine). So as you can tell so far i'm impressed.

I currently have kaspersky antivirus and my liscence is pretty close to ending. I have tried kaspersy internet security and i wasn't impressed. The firewall was just horrible. I connect to my computer when i'm not at home throuigh RDS...and trying to get RDS through their firewall was a headache to say the least. Nortons firewall seems to be a lot better than kaspersky.

To be honest the only feature i will really miss from kaspersky is Scans Web Activity (HTTP traffic). I don't think any other AV product does This. IF some of you aren't aware of this feature it actually scans the network traffic and detects malware before it even creates a file on your system.

Any thoughs guys?

NIS version anything before 09 was garbage....

But I have seen 2009 in operation a few times and what you say is true.....Small footprint, good performance and great protection.

I've tried NIS, NAV Gamers, and non Gamers.. Most impressed I've been with an Anti virus product since my initial discovery of NOD32 when I was fed up with Norton/Symantec. Once the word gets out, and the negative impressions of past experiences are lifted it should catch on. Yes, I agree I was really impressed with Kasperskys HTTP scanning abilities when I took it through a spin through Virus Valley in my vmware. I got NOD32 V4, and it scans HTTP really well also.

I actually wish NOD32 V4 was on sale somewhere else then directly from eset right now. I have looked but have not had any lucking finding it. Everywhere (newegg) is still selling version 3. I want NOD32 V4 for windows home server but V3 is not certified to work with WHS while V4 is.

The HTTP Scanning is my only holdup to be honest. Eventhough Norton was bloatware in the past (pre 2009) it was still at the top of the heap along with kaspersky in virus detection. I hate to say it but sometimes NOD32 has fallen. Kaspersky and Norton always seem to be at the top.

Been using NIS 2009 for about 6 months now on 3 systems (2 desktops/1 laptop). I too agree with the light on resources and the wealth of information provided about what is found during scans and the information it provides about my home network. I have no complaints so far. I originally started with Norton products in the mid 90s but got away from them about 7 years ago, and based on reviews have returned this past summer when a trial version of NIS 2009 was on an HP laptop I purchased and was impressed from day 1 with the latest version.

What's ironic is that they have made the symantec corporate edition lag behind the consumer edition!

I am not familar with their corp editions as the worldwide company that I work for uses Trend Micro on their corp systems.

Oh, does your employer/IT department run symantec endpoint protection and report disappointing results?

It looked good to me when we looked at it, but we were embedded with another common corporate centrally managed AV product.

OP, my PC came with it preinstalled with something like a 90 day eval. I was surprised that I was not immediately repulsed by it. I thought it was a bit laggy and tried the system with the services disabled and performance improved, but it wasn't as bad a product as it had been for this decade. But I ultimately uninstalled and went with Avast for real-time and avira and superanti for manual scans.

we use the 10.1 version and that is good but the new one is kind of buggy and slow so i haven't been rolling it out just yet...still testing.

The new Corp Release is Endpoint. Been using it (currently at ver 11 MR4) .

Very good protection, resources not an issue on a well configured system. The issue with Endpoint is not the protection or the client, it is with the management...which is obtrusive, overly complicated and just plain annoying.

The latest MR4 update fixed a LOT of the issues with SEP's management console. Post-MR3, it's very stable.

I'll agree that the initial versions of Endpoint Protection had major problems with the management console, but lately it's been a very, very good product. We've got over 50 deployments of it (we're an IT integration company, so we work with lots of other companies), and the only ones that ever have problems anymore are the ones who insist on running the manager on their 6-year-old server that they're too cheap to replace. We've had to do unmanaged installs in a couple of cases because of this.

Around six months now and NIS 2009 gets a big  from me. Nothing like the old Norton bloatware.

When my Kaspersky 7 subscription died, I got Norton 2009 as it was way cheaper and I had come across many positive comments about it here. That was a good decision as I really like it. Not saying I would not like Kaspersky's offering but it was almost double the price for similar footprint and detection performance.

I've been using Norton Internet Security 2009 for ten weeks. I despised Norton for years after an old version for Windows NT trashed my system and refused to uninstall. The new version is great, though. Fast, light, and a nice user interface that conveniently organizes the anti-virus, firewall, etc.

Norton 360 2009 is now out. It adds a backup program and some other utilities, such as a startup manager that tests to see if removing startup processes makes booting faster.
