Norton Identity Safe?

Hi.

I've been running Norton IS for very long time and adore it. But I never activated their Identity Theft Vault Option until just now, and I just made special new PW (which it said they don keep, so you must not forget it) and hint they asked for in my account, I didn't move beyond that.

I am not sure if it's worth implementing this fully or not. I have very good protection and am careful.

Does anyone here use Norton Identity Theft Vault in NIS? If so, can you pls share yr experience with it and if you think it is a good thing or a snake oil thing.

that's the first thing I uninstall when I install NAV, my laptop is always at home. and if I take it out, it's with me all the time

Hi.

Well, first, I got it wrong, it's Norton Identity SAFE.😳

Next, I run the IS, and the option to enroll in that element is just a part of the suite. It can't be uninstalled. I just never registered in it before just earlier.

Next, what did yr decision to not use it owe to?

Just trying to get clear on if it's worthy or not.

Using a single password for all your sites, forum logins, emails, etc. is a very bad idea, because once a hacker gets one password, he has access to everything

so what is the best method? to have a diff. password for everything, well not everything, but at least the very sensitive stuff like email accounts, dropbox, etc.

Now, once you do have different passwords for everything, you are faced with a delimma of trying to remember " oh gosh, what was my facebook password" it could be a headache

LastPass a password manager, it's like a big safe that has all your passwords, once you login to last pass, you have a vault, where you can see all your passwords, once you go to a site, it auto-logs you in provided you did specify auto-login for that site. IF you did not choose auto login, let's say you have a site that you have 2 accounts on, so you wouldn't wanna auto login but would rather choose which account/pass to fill in. so simply right click on the username field, then click on lastpass, then it shows you which accounts you have to login with

LastPass is very secure, all your data is encrypted, even LastPass staff cannot see your password and they do warn you, never forget your main lastpass password otherwise they cannot help

It also has a forms fill section where you can put your name, address, mobile number, you name it. So let's say you are registering on a site, simply right click on the first field, then choose lastpass, then fill form, then default form

it will magically fill everything for you

LastPass is the tool that hackers hate! because even in the rare event that you have some sort of key logger on your system, it would be useless, since you won't be typing passwords anymore, they are all filled out for you automatically! so noone can log anything

To install, go here:

Do not hit the Download button which downloads the lastpass installer for all browsers (not pale moon) plus leave it running as a process all the time

instead, click on the top right "see list of downloads for your platform"

Then click on the Download LastPass for Firefox to have it installed in your Pale Moon

As soon as you install it, it will prompt you to create an account and choose a super hard but easy to remember password

I choose to keep LastPass Auto Logged in as I am the only user for my last pass, but if other people use your computer, you might want to disable auto login so that everytime you open your browser, you login once to your lastpass, and let it do the job for other sites

This is why a clean Pale Moon profile for me is very easy. I open all my 80 bookmarks in tabs all at once, and within seconds lastpass has me logged into all sites

First, I have always made good PWs, I think. Next, I do write them down and keep them in one place.....but more important, I do let Pale Moon keep them, so, say, when I open ebay or any other PW protected site I visit, like this one, I don't waste time.

I kinda always felt it was all safe. Until I suddenly got paranoid earlier.

I really liked that this Norton Identity safe said pls write what you just did (which seemed to pass muster, and they have rules about PWs)---write it down cause we do not store these PWs, unlike the way we store yr PW to yr account.

If instead of going forth with the Norton thingy, I used the Pale Moon add on thingy....would I be safer than what I do now in PM?

PS: 80 bookmarks???😵 You get logged on to all of them at once? See, that creeps me out. I think it's a little terrifying, actually.😱

Why would it creep you, about 10 forums I put them in a folder

Pale Moon Add-ons folder that I usually install for when I decide to do a fresh profile install of Pale Moon all my add-ons are ready

I do get the picture! See, I almost never do clean installs. Including re the OS. I try to keep everything lean and clean so I don have to, and I have very few add ons in PM.

Remember, we are each unique!!!😀

Wow. Thanks, John, I never heard of that! But however irrational, some app generating one PW.....creeps me out. I feel better doing my own and individual ones....another reason I did not move forward after enrolling in the Norton thingy.

In me, this is akin to my being creeped out by cloud storage. I jus don trust it. Maybe crazy, but true at this point.

It's a journey.

I get this works for you really well, tho!
 
Jus wanna say, as always, I cherish the input when I post needing info.

But, in this event, what I would luv, if possible, is someone who actually uses the Norton Identify Safe to share their subjective experience with it.

That so far, nobody here seems to use it....must mean sumthin right there. Cause, if it was worth diddly, bet someone here would be using it!

But, being an optimist, I will wait, hoping someone here does use it. Or, at least, has tried it.

yes, use it with a local account, which I think was done away with in new installs of nis 2013 and later in favor of cloud based idsafe.. local accounts stick in later versions if it was already established. it's handy and I assume secure. does the job anyway.

Hi and thanks. I guess I have a local account, cause I established one in earlier version before I upgraded and it still works with original PW as U would expect.

OK, maybe I will get past my doubt and trepidations and move forward. I did like, when I made my PW, and they accepted it as comporting with their very specific little rules, they said do not loose it, cause we do not store this one.

I just never used anything like this before.🙄
 
OK, I started moving forward to fill stuff out. But I immediately got cold feet, and then, felt this is not necessary.

Pls see below. See, almost all the sites I shop on or pay bills on, store my data securely and I trust them.

The couple that do not, takes me 7 seconds to enter the data. I am having lack of clarity and doubts cause I am human and this is part of life sometimes.

This probably doesn't help you but I'm with you regarding password safety. Like you, I'd rather have 30 individual passwords than the same one. I keep a list of everything on my phone in an encrypted note pad. Even if someone was to steal my phone and break the encryption, I don't have the accounts identified by name, just initials.

OMG, yes! Yay! SOOOOOOOOO relieved I am not the only one!

And, I started delving (better late than never) and found this review, and they say the LastPass thingy I learned about here, if U go in the direction altogether, is better anyhow.

No matter how secure they say it is....to me, it too much resembles a physical master key or master key card. Who can guarantee the security of those?😱

I also started using LastPass recently so that I could improve the strength of all my on-line passwords. I'm still learning all that it can do, but am already very satisfied.

I suppose it can be argued that this is a groundless phobia, but I can't understand why anyone would trust their password database (no matter how well encrypted) to any form of internet or cloud storage. That's why I also decided not to implement Norton Security Safe. I keep my LastPass database on my PC only (mirrored file with a back-up printout). I also don't trust my browser to store passwords (even my Anandtech one!)

Wow. Could this be anymore interesting than it is? NO.

And, it made be think maybe I am not as scrupulous about strong PWs as I think!!!!

And sorry, increasingly, I am getting the 'phobia' in question is not, in fact, GROUNDLESS.

See, there I was, saying to myself, Jeeze, Grow up, stop being a WUS, move forward!

But sometimes, that too, is part of life. Not as if we can right click on such things and send them to the bin. Nor, are we meant to, cause we learn from all these often painful journeys.

U endure confusion, U chase data... and you get better at making differential decisions in general. Empowerment is within and I think, is about earned clarity.

You need to read about it. You can use one input (password) and it will generate a unique password per site based on the URL. So in a way this prevents phishing.
