Norton Ghost Question

Hi,

I am looking for a solution to regularly backup my entire HD into a ghost file.

I have several questions:

1. Can it be run on Win2K Server? Will it run in the operating system mode?
2. Will it backup ALL the files? ALL includes files that are currently tied up by the OS.
3. Can I back it up to a HD?
4. Can I back it up to another server on my network ?
5. Can it be restored using a ghost boot disk and call up the ghost image over the network?

I will buy norton ghost enterprise if needed.

You must image to a partition other than the target.

Best part of ghost 2001: it can dump direct to cdr.

Ghost as far as I know, isn't really a Windows program. it doesn't do it's magic while in the OS that it's backing up. it runs independantly from startup.

err, I'll try and answer your questions by explaining how Ghost works.

First, check to see what version of Ghost supports Win2k server edition, I believe anything starting with version 6 does. Ghost does not run under Win2k or any other gui operating system. Instead, you boot into dos (either from a hard drive, or from a dos disk) and run ghost from there. As such, no files are 'tied up' etc. Ghost simply creates a 'picture' in the form of an image file of your entire hard drive, or if you desire, a partition of your hard drive.

You can store that image file anywhere you want (CD, tape, network drive, other hard drive, wherever), but you cannot create the image on the same drive that you are backing up.

Once you have the image file somewhere, you can just boot to dos (from a boot disk including network drivers if you need them) and restore the image to the drive (overwriting anything that's already on the drive). The drive you write to doesn't have to be the same drive or even the same size.

Ghost is not a really program I want for continuous backup solution.

I have used ghost myself but am wondering if it is possible to create a ghost image while you're in the OS mode.

You'll probably need Ghost 6.5 (released August 2000) to properly handle all things NTFS.

Regular backup Ghost is fine, continious backup then RAID mirror.
