If I understand your post, take a look at Terabyte 'Image for Windows'.

I backup my OS partition to DVD weekly. Briefly:
- 4Gb backs up in 12 minutes + 3 minutes for byte-for-byte image verification (at 8X).
- The DVD created is self-bootable.
- If you wish, you can also use Terabyte 'Image for DOS' program to restore.
'Image for Windows' is $28, and includes 'Image for DOS'. Image for DOS, by itself, is only $18 (same capabilities - but slower).
IFW does image_Windows_from_Windows, but you must use the free Phylock utility.
I've restored my OS partition numerous times - perfectly - with this software.
