Norton AntiVirus 2009 for 1 PC Free after Rebate (Again)

Staples will have Norton AntiVirus 2009 for 1 PC Free after $20 Easy Rebate (no mailing) and $20 upgrade rebate. 6/7-6/13 page 5 of the 6/7 ad available for viewing at Staples.com.

SKU 758728

I believe both rebates come in the form of prepaid Visa cards - at least mine did and for sure the $20 upgrade one does.

Edited May deal to reflect that it's FAR again.

Really, the 2009 version of Norton is soooo much improved over the past versions which killed it's rep. I bought the $20 NIS deal offered at Frys last week.

I've had to clean countless instances of spyware/malware/adware from friends and/or customers PC's over the past couple months. Several were "protected" by Norton software. Norton didn't fire one alert. On the last one (as I did with all the others) I put mbam on there and it came up with about 30 hits, none of which were cookies. All registry entries, running processes, and malware hidden in the usual spots. In my somewhat professional opinion, Norton is a bloated P.O.S. Sorry to thread crap but if you really want protection, there are other (free) options out there.

The 2009 version has been redesigned and is much better. It's not bloated. Try it.

maybe not *AS* bloated, but still resource hog

That's funny because all the reviews are praising it for how light on resources it is and how little it affects your system's performance. So my guess is that you don't know what you're talking about.

It might not be bloated on a new system with 4gb ram and a fast dual/quadcore cpu. Try running it on a 3-4 year old computer. It IS bloated. And the 2009 version has been out for something like 8 or 9 months. It's not any better than the previous versions (in *my* opinion).

Nevertheless, if you want to mess with a rebate and get norton 2009 for free, by all means, go for it. That's a good deal if norton is your thing.

I'm running it on a laptop from 2001, it has no noticeable impact on it.

I'm guessing it's not really scanning or checking anything. I'm sure the programmers at Symantec probably thought, "Well, since our software doesn't do jack anyways except slow down computers, we could probably sell more copies if we made it take up less resources and do the same (nothing) amount of work!"

Haha, I kid. 🙂 I'm a Kaspersky whore and will never, ever, use anything else.

This is hilarious because a friend of mine told me they saw someone at Staples today getting charged $50 for Norton + Install.

I got KAV 2007 FAR and installed it on a 2.4GHz P4. Every time I would try to do something, Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" would come to mind because KAV would stop the computer dead in it's tracks. It was like computing behind the Iron Curtain. I'm so glad that I didn't pay for that POS. Never again.

Avira all the way!

"Norton Antivirus 2009 is a dramatic improvement over previous versions. Norton's old versions were known to be computer resource hogs in the Tech community. However, Norton has addressed these concerns with their 2009 version - it's now the fastest scanning, and uses the least system memory of any of its major competitors (including Kaspersky, NOD32, McAfee, Trend, BitDefender and others)." Look at the comparison here: http://www.antivirusware.com/misc/passmark/

Scan speed, Norton wins.
Memory utilization, Norton wins by far.
Boot time, only NOD32 beats Norton.
Installation size, Norton wins.

BTW, I don't even use it, I use Avira because it's free. But I do think people should get their facts straight before bad-mouthing a product.

I agree I used to recommend almost anything but Norton but this year's version has completely changed my opinion of both their product and them as a company. It is obvious they listened to the bashing they were getting and turned things around nicely.

Are you referring to AV or IS, or both? I'll have to try them out on an old system.

Enclose proof of previous ownership of a stand-alone or pre-loaded version of any Norton? or Symantec? software OR another company?s antivirus, firewall, antispam, antispyware, utility, or back up software product.

Proof of previous ownership submission requirements: a) Previous owners of a stand-alone, retail (boxed or downloaded) product must enclose either a copy of the previous product?s CD, first page of manual (usually titled ?User?s Guide?), or your confirmation email from your previous download purchase. b) Previous owners of pre-loaded (OEM) software product must enclose a copy of the previous product?s Help/About screen.

FWIW, Fry's newspaper ad is featuring the 3-user version of NAV 2009 for $4.99. Available online too with free shipping.

NOTE: This is an announcement for people who do use NAV. If you have a better deal on what you think is a better product then start your own thread.

For those of you stating that it is a resource hog, try it. It is free.

I use it on an old Dell C600 laptop.

The only difference is that I have upgraded the RAM to 512 and I run XP on it instead of Windows 2000. And I have never seen any slowness due to Norton 2009.

Processor manufacturer: Intel
Processor model: Mobile Pentium III
Clock speed: 0.85 GHz
RAM installed: 128 MB
Wireless LAN: integrated antenna for wireless 802.11b networking via a Mini-PCI card
Hard drive size: 10 GB
Graphics processor: ATi Rage Mobility 128 AGP 2X
Graphics RAM: 8 MB
Operating system: Windows 2000 Professional

So again, for free, try it and stop whining about it. See for yourself that they changed 2009 to not be a resource hog at all.

Nice 1st post lurkerman

Its good for Norton that they finally got their software together. Personally I'm waiting for MS's new, free OneCare replacement to be released at the end of the month. OneCare 2.5 has been very well rated so I'm hoping its free replacement carries on the same.
