I'm thinking of getting Norton AntiVirus 2003 or 2004.

Does Norton's Auto-Protect feature alleviate me from ever having to do manual scans on files?

And how are these newer versions of Auto-Protect on system resources? I remember earlier versions of these background protection utilities to be a major drag on system resources.

The Auto-Protect will save you for the most part, however, you should still do periodic system scans, the reason being that Norton may not pick up on a virus if it is very new and therefore the auto-protect may miss it. Then once the virus is known and a new virus definition file is available with a fix, then if you never run a system scan, you'd never be able to fix it. I run a system scan once a week at some odd hour of the morning when I'm asleep (like 5:30am, later than I would stay up, earlier than I wake up).

As for the system resources, Anti-virus programs have come a long way in hogging all your resources. Either that, or computers can just handle them better nowadays.

I definitely recommend Norton over McAfee, and I would say get Norton SystemWorks Professional. There have been multiple deals for it in the Hot Deals forum.

i find little difference between 2003 and 2004, with one major exception (btw, i haven't read fature change/list)

2004 pops up a little msn messager-like window saying that such and such program is waiting for the scand of such and such file... for example, when i d/led the new doom3 screenshows zip, i go tthe msg:

"Windows Explorer is waiting for doom3_shots_8-19-03.zip to be scanned" or somethign to that effect. only slows files a bit (i like to turn off when i run battlefield), but other than that, it's all transparent

How do you switch those scans of compressed files off?

They really piss me off.

I downloaded the matrix trailer the other day from OT, the 100meg one, and norton popped up and froze my computer for 5 mins because it was scanning the thing :|

I cant find anywhere to switch it off?! :frown:

Yeah, I'm not liking that popup scan. Did 2003 do that?
