I'm looking into installing norton av ce 8.1 on a companies server and clients (10 total comps) and had a few questions. They are running a Windows NT server with clients running XP. I read the system requirements for the product but was kind of confused as to if it could be successfully implemented. The clients don't log into the server per-say, the only time they supply a username/pass to the server is when they want to get into their shared folder on the server. Could norton av corporate work for them?

I would think no because the theory behind a workgroup is that there are no centralized servers. I would look through the manual set up section...I'm sure it will tell you whether it's at all possible.

Yeah it looks like it should be able to do it:

Step 3: Symantec AV Server installation
Symantec recommends that you select a computer which is not heavily utilized by other services for the Symantec AV Server. While the server software can be installed on computers such as Exchange Servers and IIS Servers, it is not recommended. The Server component can be installed on Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation or Server with Service Pack 6a), Windows 2000 (Professional, Server, or Advanced Server), Windows XP Pro workstation, and on Novell NetWare 5 and 6 with Service Pack 1.

NOTE: When installing Symantec AV server to a Windows NT4 workstation, you will have only 10 possible connections available at one time. This means that no more then 10 simultaneous client login installations can occur.

The Symantec AV Server installation can be performed remotely or locally from either CD 1 or from the "AV Server Rollout" option from the Tools menu in SSC. You will see the AV Server Rollout option only if you have installed the "AV Server Rollout Tool" from the SSC and management components installation.

NOTE: In a non-WINS environment, both AV Server rollout and NT client rollout may have difficulty seeing computers in the Available Computer list. In order to resolve that problem, Symantec AV 8.x has a new enhancement called the import button. This enhancement allows an administrator to manually compile a list of IP addresses into a text file and import that list to allow it to see those computers that Symantec AV cannot locate.

It says even if it can't find computers you can import a list of IP addresses for computers to act as clients. Sounds like I'm good to go.
