Norton 360 made a backup of my harddrive

Okay so I had my Norton 360 make a backup of my harddrive and that backup was 11 gigs.

So then when I went to delete the backup and remove it from the recycle bin, I looked back at my second hard drive and it still showed 11 gigs missing. I didn't get my 11 gigs back!

Is it gone for good?

Shouldn't be - maybe if you look back in your recycle bin, it'll still be there. Or maybe somehow it restored it to your first HDD... Noel

davey,

I'd have to agree with your take on those reviews... I use Acronis True Image and am on version 11 now. Have used versions 9 and 10 before - all good compared to Norton. I have used Norton 9 and 10 in the past and they are now on the shelf :)

Kromis - check that first HDD... If it's not there, right click on My Computer, Manage, then Disk Management. It will show you what your HDDs look like, and I'm sure you'll find your 11 GBs. I'm sure Norton didn't take them... your HDD is a physical unit and still has the platters on it with all those GBs that you bought. Right now it's a software issue!

Same here NoelS, i'm currently using Acronis 11 as well and have been using it since version 7. Nothing is better or more stable for backups IMO. Highly recommended.

IMO uninstall that junk. Norton has been total cheese for a while now. There are free and better options available. Here is what I would recommend:

antivirus
AVG Free This has a small footprint and works great

firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall Another free program that is simple and effective

antispyware
Ad-aware or spybot, whatever.

Kromis, in your spare time, try giving the above link a read. It's 138 user reviews on Amazon of Norton 360.

I'd have to agree with 90% of them. Just my .02 :)

Okay well...I see my missing 11 GBs. Now the question is...How do I get it back? Like...how do I delete it to get it back? :)

Kromis,

That 11GB is probably shown as an unallocated segment, or free space. You need to select it and create a new logical drive, then I think Windows will ask if you want it formatted; say yes and select whether NTFS or FAT32... Then you'll need to resize the entire HDD to encompass the "lost segment into it."

EDIT: You may not be able to re-size the drive(s) using the Windows applet (I just tried, it didn't work)... you could end up with a new partition in the second HDD. If you have Partition Magic, you can leave the 11GB the way it is, select it and resize to zero, then re-size the rest of the HDD to encompass the 11GB.

You may have to format the entire drive, then FDisk it to get the entire second HDDs size back.

It looks like you may have initially deleted the partition that Ghost used... that's why you are where you are now.

Let us know how it works out.

Mothereffing BULL!

Haha, I can't do ANYTHING with that 11 GB. It is not considered unallocated and when I right click it to look at my options, all I get is "Help"

Looks like I'm screwed...ain't I?

Well, thanks Noel. You've been a BIG help. :D

Dave,

Chill... you can get it back!!!!

Do you know how to use FDisk? Just FDisk that drive (you'll lose the data on it). BUT it has to be FAT32 to be seen in DOS. Maybe use Disk Management to change it if it's NTFS and not FAT32. FDisk will let you reallocate all the pieces. Be careful with FDisk if you don't know how to use it, you could screw it up worse.

Another option - go to the HDD manufacturer's site and there should be a download for setting up a new disk of theirs for storage, OS or whatever. It should let you reallocate all the pieces. What brand is the HDD? I know WD, Seagate and Maxtor all have a CD in their new HDD boxes, maybe you already have one. Use it, should work if you follow the instructions. I've had HDDs with missing segments that those CDs have recovered.

Hang in there. When all else fails, RMA the HDD for a new one :)

Mines is a Seagate 320GB 7200.10

And unfortunately, I do not know how to use FDisk. :(

Dave,

Look for your Seagate CD that came with the drive. If you can't find it, go here: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/in...nVCM100000dd04090aRCRD Look for DiskWizard in the General Downloads section and download it. There are other programs on the site if that doesn't work - like SeaTools for diagnostics.

Play with the program and use the partitioning segment in there. Delete the 11GB segment and expand the rest to fill it up. Should work. If not play with the program until you get it right.

That site also has a knowledge base that might help...

Let me know how it goes. Good luck, Noel

Dave,

What's happening? Did you find the CD or d/l the Seagate program(s)? Keep us up to date on your problem.
