Norton 2003 taking up 700 megs of ram...wtf

naturally i'd assume that it scans all the files downloaded by shareaza for virii... but even when the files are done and when i quit shareaza, norton's memory usage never decreases...only increases... on a regular basis... i have 1.5 gigs of ram so its bearable but i still find myself having to reboot every day or every other day to reset it's ram usage...

does anyone else notice this?
is it a norton2003 bug or a shareaza bug or what?

afaik this happens with other p2p clients as well... i don't really wanna disable the resident virus scanner but i just might if it keeps this crap up... :|

Better then Kaspersky? Norton is very dissapointing if you ask me, and does take up way too much RAM.

Norton 2003 is an antique, one way or the other. Even with today's definitions, its engine can't see what Norton calls Expanded Threats (dialers, hack tools, adware, spyware and "security risks"). If you want something free, AntiVir would be worth a shot, the drawback to it being that you must manually launch updates.

You can get a 30-day trial of Kaspersky from http://www.kaspersky.com/trials if you want to try that, I'm doing that right now. I'd set it to Maximum detection on the real-time and on-demand scanners, and go to Settings tab > Configure Updater and set it to update from Internet with extended databases like this picture. Ooops, except that picture shows the third option, "from a local folder." But you would select the Internet Extended option there.

You can also get 15-day trials of Norton 2005 and McAfee VirusScan 9.0 if you want.

Really, if you're going to be running risks, then $42 for some good antivirus software is probably a good investment.

kaspersky seems awesome... i downloded the trial last yaer and was pretty impressed with it... i'm a student though and 60 bucks isn't so bad for the pro version, except for the fact that you have to renew the license every year and pay more... whatever happened to lifetime licenses?

Need I go on? 🙂 You get what you pay for.

you couldn't be more right...! 🙂

i'd love to pay for all my software one day (or use all open source or something) but right now i'm not in a position where its viable... 🙁

kaspersky is amazing tho and takes up few resources apparently so i guess i'll give the trial a shot until i make more money! 😛

thx for the informative post btw!

No its not, In fact, I'd go so far as to say that ALL of the free alternatives are better then Norton.

Do what you want, its not like I care which AV or FW you use, but Norton still suxx.

Good, now you get to go through the horrible process of removing Norton from your comp. Good luck with that, its almost impossible to completely remove it unless you know what your doing. It imbeds itself deeper then most apps, McAffee is the only thing that comes close.

The Best Free Security suit for Windows might be.

Upgrade your Windows XP to SP2. and then use.

1. Kerio v215.

Kerio is very easy to configure, it is light on resources, and does what need to be done.

Kerio has a newer version of the Firewall; do no get tempted stick with the above it is a better product.

2. AntiVir Personal Edition.

AntiVir has very high rating for detecting Virus, and does better then other Antivirus program blocking Trojans.

3. Microsoft AntiSpyb1

It was judged by many independent reviewers as the best of its kind.

Example: http://www.windowssecrets.com/050127/

The above three are running active in the Background, and have to be installed on all of the computers.

:sun:

P.S. Norton NIS 2003 (depending on the features that are On) takes about 30-50MB ram.
Something is Bad with your installation.

My Norton 2003 AV subscription runs out in 10 days and I'm getting nagging renew reminder. I haven't had any problems with Norton 2003 but if other products are better, I don't mind switching. I would like free but I don't mind paying either if it means it's much better.

So is AntiVir Personal Edition good enough or is Kaspersky the way to go?

I like the good detection rates and hourly updates of Kaspersky. If I'm going to pay, that's what I'd get at this point. I did just buy it for Mom (benefits from the hourly updates) and for my little sister (needs the best protection she can get since she's a bit of a risk-taker 😱).

My 30-day trial runs out in three days, but I'm not sure if I'll buy it for me, since I have zero "risk fact0rz" (yeah, those kind) and run a Restricted-User account anyway. Then again, the Russian economy does need stimulation... 😉 *kicks the idea around some more*

i guess this is something i've gotten lazy with... i very rarely get popups, spyware, virii or any other kind of malware... i use MS antispyb1, nav2003 and ZA Free... i know the last two are somewhat bloated but my rig could handle it and 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'...rigtht?

norton has really been bothering me lately so i think the switch to something else is imminent...not sure about ZA though...

I had Norton 2004 and I tried Antivir to look for something less resource intensive, It found a virus on my machine that Norton let through. I like Antivir alot, the only downside is the updates. You download a whole new file for definitions and stuff instead of appending the existing file. I'm on dialup and it's not too bad, with bb I think it would be a non-issue.

In my Post above I forgot to mention that the selection is done with secondary consideration concerning computers thta are Networked.

If you have one single computer it does not matter so much what you use. Bloated and similar expressions coming from the old days of 64KB memory and 10MB hard drive are not really a problem with today?s ?Rigs?.

When it comes to Single users that are Not computer savvy I found out that it is the best to Stick in Norton NIS with Live Update and Microsoft AntiSpyware, and you would have peace of mind (at list for a while).

I strongly dislike ZA on Network computers.
