Northwest Airlines pulls pretzels from domestic flights

MINNEAPOLIS -- Northwest Airlines Corp. passengers who said goodbye to free meals in February at least got free pretzels to console them. Now the airline is taking the pretzels away, too.

Beginning June 9, coach passengers who want anything other than soda will have to pay for it. They can get a 3-ounce bag of trail mix for $1. Northwest spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch said the airline has no immediate plans to stop offering soda for free.

He said pulling the free pretzels should save $2 million a year.

Enh, I won't exactly miss the pretzels. The soda is nice but I expect they'll be charging $1 to $2 for that shortly.

 

For some reason, ginger ale tastes way better on an airplane than anywhere else in the world.

Considering how much you have already paid for your flight, and how much you pay for the simplest food at a Movie Theatre - I don't have any problem with them making you pay for the little snacks. I think half the time people don't really want them, but they eat them because it's given to them.

I wonder how much they would save if they started giving passengers those smaller soda cans (half the size of a normal one)...

And cutting $2 mil from their CEO's salary and bonus package couldn't POSSIBLY have been an easier way to do that?

Total compensation for Anderson, Northwest CEO, was $2,802,788 for the year ended Dec. 31. His compensation was up 126.3 percent from the previous year's total compensation of $1,238,305.

Airline meals will only come back as finger food, since knives and forks are history. I always take my own snacks or chow down before I depart anyway.

Yep.

Whenever we get to the airport, we're always ready to board more than 20 minutes before the plane is actually ready.

So we just go to the food court and get something for the flight.

I never eat their snacks anyways, and rarely drink their soda... usually as soon as I get on the plane I pass out until we land...

Of course, it's different on international flights. My family flies internationally very frequently and a lot of the airlines offer gourmet cuisine on board. It's not really needed for domestic flights. The longest flight is 5 hours (West to East coast) and it's usually on those flights that they serve some sort of meal.

Flights like LAX to DFW or ORD, those are only about 2½-3 hours, and people usually just sleep.

In my life, I've missed 2 flights. Both times, we (me and the people I was with) just waited 3 hours for the next flight.

Market dynamics. If the guy can make a better salary elsewhere he'll leave, so they're forced to compensate him to keep him.

That's the theory, anyways. I don't know anything about Northwest Airlines' operations, so maybe he's been there for a long time.

yeah that's true. Ben & Jerry's tried to say that their CEO salary would be no more than 10x or 15x (I forget exactly) greater than their lowest employee's salary. They couldn't get anyone qualified enough for the job.
