honestly i believe cox has the best bandwidth among all US broadband carriers.

Not really, cablevisions service is 10Mbit down and 1 Mbit up 🙂

My cablevision is only 5Mbit down here in central jersey, how do you rate. Plus only $34.99 month, but we were thinking of moving to virginia over by harpers ferry. So it is nice to know, because i love my high speed.😀

3Mbps is nice, I dropped COX HSI in NOVA though because of frequent outages, horribly inconsistent latency/ping times (sometimes pings would stay at a constant 10ms for a site like dslreports.com, sometimes they would skyrocket to 500ms and sometimes the packets would just never come back!), inconsistent speeds (During peak hours in my area the speeds would jump up and down), and the biggest killer of all is the download/upload caps. Cox limits the amount of data you can download to 30 Gigs a month down, 2 Gigs per day and for uploads its 10 Gigs a month down, 1 Gig per day. Now this doesn't just count files you're downloading ... it counts everything including someone that might be DOS'ing your line with packet floods.

I switched to Covad's SOHO package (1.5/384) and have had 0 downtime since switching, consistent latency, and consistent speeds ... Plus no nasty emails from Covad about downloading or uploading too much.

The Aug. 1 transition will be automatic, Cox officials said, although the company will notify customers of the change. There will be no change in the $39.95 monthly rate for customers who subscribe to Cox Cable and the broadband service. Non-cable customers will continue to pay $54.95 a month for Cox Internet connections.

Dang it. My cable provider just recently implemented new bandwidth limits and you guys get better speeds. Not quite fair...

Goddammit - I would rather have 2mbps down and 512kbps up!

~22.5k/sec uploads doth not rule!

I just hope this "free" speed doesn't come at a price of more network outages due to overuse and overallocation - or down the road with another impromptu "price increase" when customers switching from DSL because Cox's network to be overwhelmed twice as fast, making them invest in new nodes, passing the cost onto the subscribers.

Maybe it's a good thing, or maybe they just upgraded their network to facilitate a massive TV-On-Demand rollout, which will suck the bandwidth down the drain?

Still get "1.5 megabits per second" on the bandwidth speed test. I'll keep testing it every day to see when we actually get the increase.

A few years ago I switched from the ridiculous Cox Digital Cable TV service - ridiculous because several years ago only about four channels were truly digital and there was no Dolby Digital sound at all - to DirecTV. Is this still the case? I was living in Newport News. Since the penalty for cable internet was another $20 if you didn't also have their HORRIBLE expensive JOKE for TV service and suffer through their HORRIBLE customer service with employees who don't care and smack gum in your ear when you call, I switched Internet to Verizon DSL. I might be tempted to consider switching back to COX. Do they support Dolby Digital for the TV service yet? Have they left the 1980s with their supposedly high-tech product? Are the employees still rude and obnoxious when you have a problem?

Heinrich -
My two cents... I have Dish - just got Comcast for Cable Modem & have been trying the 'TV' promotion as a 'freebie'. Quite frankly, even with DISH's compressed signal, it kicks cables butt. Also, you are digital audio ONLY on the premium channels - otherwise it requires a seperate audio run!!! (stereo).

I'll be turning in the TV service & keeping Dish. Just wish Dish cared about there existing customers better... (would love to upgrade to HDTV, but dish is a bit standoff-ish to existing customers...)

BTW - I'm in NOVA...

Cox in Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads is and has been 3Mb for years. My service here has always been fantastic. (Rosemont/South Plaza area, and before on Independence/South Plaza)

Well it sounds like I won't be doing this although I want to because COX TV is horrible and does not support 21st century home theater technology. Hell, they still don't support 20th century technology. Can I get Cox Cable through the back door such as another provider in Hampton Roads? For instance I can get Verizon DSL through any number of ISPs because they all use Verizon's phone lines.

Make sure to reset the modem before you try each time...

When i bumped mine up to 3mbps i have to reset the modem before the speed change took effect...

Hmm, I had COX's business class cable in Chesapeake, VA which was always excellent. Now I'm in Alexandria, right near Springfield now and it's great up here also. I'm hoping this new limit @ mbps is not theoretical, but actual usable bandwidth.

I was also @ VT for 5 years... I wish a chastising pox upon Adelphia and NTC!

Hrm, so they probably won't do this in too many places?

I live in Tucson and have Cox, doesnt seem quite worth $50 a month yet...hopefully the double speed will come this way.

Everyone should check their connections. I got knocked off just around 12:45am 7/30 and now I'm registering 2-3.2mbit on bandwidth tests.

Upload is the same.

EDIT: 2:27am, 7/30 - now it seems to be back to "normal" speeds. I foresee trouble with this switch. I just hope Cox hasn't bitten off more than it can chew.

Wow, I just did the test at DSL reports, I always got around 1000kbps to 1500kbps, never higher, this test was 2981kbps

I'm moving to Portsmouth, VA (near the Bide-a-Way golf course), is Cox improving service there as well, or is DSL the best game in town? Also, I heard a rumor that Cox limits your total bandwidth use to like 6GB/month or something - is that true?

Just wondering if other people experienced a slowdown in service. I subscribed when cox started providing internet in my area (Fairfax county) and it was blazing fast but over time it "seems" to have gotten slower and slower.
