Northbridge HS/F Removal

Senior member
I have a Soyo Kt400 Ultra Mobo. The Northbridge Fan has gone Bad so I'm replacing it with a Zalman ZM-NB47J HS.

I already have the Mobo removed from the PC & the Holding-Pins Unlatched from the Back-side of the Mobo.

Problem; The HS/F seems 'Glued' to the Northbridge. How do I remove the HS/F ???

Thanks

You can try the freezer method, it might be some sort of epoxy...

Put it in the freezer (in an airtight bag so condensation doesn't get in)...

Leave for half an hour. Take it out
Then twist the fan, and when it twists around and around, pull it off.

Its probably stuck on with some tape or some thermal adhesive.

you can use this. Text This is how i take off stubborn chipset heatsinks.

Thanks, What kind of 'Air-tight' Bag is Big Enough to fit a Full sized ATX Mobo ???

Any other suggestions ???

Thanks

I personally would never put a mobo in a bag in a freezer
If NB has mounting pins it was not epoxied on.
After a while the heat allows the el cheapo thermal cpd to get sticky and thin out, so its like trying to remove a suction cup.
Turn on system, let it get hot with mount pins OUT, then ROTATE it off - do not pull up.

Unfortunately I can't turn on the PC. I already have the Mobo Out of the PC. Other Ideas ?

Also, You say to "ROTATE" it Off "Do not Pull-Up". Any reason Why you can't "Pull" Straight Up ???

Also, Any Idea how much Artic Silver 5 to put on the NB when i install the Zalman HS ???

Thanks alot.

Northbridge HSFs use a tape usually. Once you release the pins it should twist off. Just pulling it is not good, you could damage the chip or crack the mobo.

You never use anything but a THIN layer of Artic Silver, evenly spread.

Plug the Power Supply onto the Motherboard even though the Mobo is completely removed from the Case ???, the only thing stiil connected to the Mobo is the CPU w/ HS/F & the Memory, Are you sure ???

placing the mobo on a phone book or its original box right next to case is standard operating procedure here, especially to check if mobo is grounding out on case standoffs. You only need to plug in power and reset tabs to header strip, and main atx.
Always touch your finger to grounded metal case to prevent Electrostatic discharge before touching anything else, especiaklly if theres a rug in room.

Remember what Franklin delanor Roosevelt once said:
"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself"

Thanks you all for the Help.

I've got the PC back together w/ the Zalman installed. I'm Typing this on the PC.

I've been running for over an Hour and everything runs fine.

I also took out my Old PSU & Replaced it w/ a New Ultra 500Watt ($15 after MIR at Outpost), while I had the PC dismantled.

If everything runs Ok for the next couple of Hours, I'll then install the New EVGA 6800NU ($154 after MIR, newegg).

Bozo, you must be an Avid OC'er to run the PC with the Mobo outside of the Case. ??? Sounds a little to in-depth

Thanks again ya'll
