NorthBridge Cooling on DS3 with Arctic Cooling Freezer 7

So my AC Freezer 7 overhangs the stock northbridge cooler on my DS3 mobo, and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations besides rigging up a 40mm fan on top of the NB.
Thanks,
Alex

I have a Noctua NC-U6 on my DS3. I can fit the Freezer 7 on the right orientation with the Noctua, but not the stock. I put a 60mm fan on the NC-U6 and run it at 5v, making it completely silent. Installing it is a bit tricky though because you have to align the pins first. The P965 chipset also has resistors and whatnot on top of the PCB so you can't use the entire foam shim that comes with the NC-U6; you have to cut it into small pieces and place them in select places.

But all in all the Noctua NC-U6 is a very nice chipset cooler.

Did you have any space issues with the Ultra-120 and the HR-05 on the DS3? I have read one other post that said they had issues but I am wondering if that person just didn't align the heatsinks well.

Thanks 🙂

Nope, no space issues since the fan for the HR-05 is on the opposite side to where the Ultra-120 is. I DID have space issues with the Big Typhoon I had before. The HR-05 would rest against the Big Typhoon. Only thing I don't like about the HR-05 is that it is tall but is only mounted with the plastic push-through clips like the stock heatsink. Since it is so tall, and the mounting is not very steady, you can tip it very easily just by putting very slight pressure on it.

That would do the trick too I think...and you probably won't run into any space issues either. Can the tape peel off though since the NB gets VERY hot (I literally burned my finger not thinking it would be blazing hot), especially if overclocking?

The Revision 1 heatsink is definitely smaller than the Revision 2's. You can't even mount the Freezer 7 that way (blowing towards back) on a Revision 2 DS3.

It hasn't come off in 6 months of running Folding@home 24/7 and I never see temps over 45c measured at the heat sink with a infrared thermometer also with a thermistor type probe. 😎

PS:
I am running the Fan @ 7v and it is silent this way and the Tape is the 3m type used in body shops to attach molding and trim.

Amos 😎
