Northbridge and PSU

I was wondering what happens if the notrthbridge is overheating?

I opened up the ol' case and felt the HS... YIKES... it was so hot i couldn't hold my hand there for more than 3 secs.

Also i would like opinions on my PSU that im using because i think im having problems with it... here is the link

Which PSU would be the most highly recommended.

Here are my readings
+3.3V= 3.32
+5V= 4.89
+12V=12.54

As you can see on the Anandtech article this PSU SUCKS!!!! It is loud and hot. Also i noticed that it is overvolting my CPU. I have it set at 1.8V yet it reads as 1.856V...

What do ya think should i upgrade to a new PSU... if so what kind... i want it stron yet very silent...

(BTW: Mine doesn't have the SATA connectors)

well, your rails are all within +/- 5%, which is the amount of swing that should be allowable, so it should be fine. If you suspect bad power, though, couldn't hurt to test with an actual multimeter just to be sure.

If your northbridge is getting that hot, you may want to look into aftermarket cooling solutions for it. How are your case and CPU temps? I don't run my FSB very high, but on my A7N8X the northbridge cooler hasn't ever been too hot to touch, even when I was using the stock heatsink (switched to one of these Zalmans just for kicks).

BTW, your CPU overvolting isn't related to the PSU. Asus mobos just always overvolt by a bit, and that 0.05V is pretty normal for the A7N8X series.

If you really want a new PSU, Antecs have generally been pretty highly recommended, but they seem to be falling out of favor a bit now (never had any problems with mine though). Zalman PSUs are also supposed to be pretty decent, though they tend to have a bit of a price premium due to their noise reduction features.

As you might have seen this PSU isn't rated worth crap.

What happens when the northbridge overheats?

Case temps range for 20-30C Processor (your gonna scream when you see this) 59C idle 67C load. This is with 4 3000 RPM (They are cheap with little airflow) fans. My ambient temps are high ranging from 70F-85F.

Never had a northbridge overheat, so can't say specifically (hopefully somebody who's experienced it can weigh in) but anything overheating would probably cause instability. I would guess, though, since the NB handles the link between CPU and RAM, data transfer could get corrupted even if your CPU and RAM can handle whatever speed you're running at. Can you Prime and MemTest w/o errors?

Im not famiiar with mem test but prime 95 yeah i ran it for 8 hours with out any porblems.
