North versus South opinion on Sherman

Inspired by the Lincoln thread.

A lot of southerns view Sherman as an evil man. I don't view him as evil but he did commit evil acts. Just as America had to use evil acts in WW2 to end the war with Japan.

When you know your opponent won't surrender until completely devastated, you do what you have to do.

Sherman did what he needed to do in order to ensure the south would give up.

I agree with you. War is hell and when someone declares war on you, they lose the luxury of righteous indignation about your acts.

I don't think either side in the Civil War was inclined to
join hands and sing Kumbaya over their alleged activities.
