Saw it and yes I agree it is a fascinating look into the "Hermit Kingdom of North Korea". One thing which struck me as ironic and funny is when they go to a compound (part 3 at the 2:50 mark) and they meet a party leader outside the gate. They ask him if he has heard of any problems with people defecting and he basically says no.

Then he is ask if a person were to defect and found if they would be punished and he says yes. Then goes on spiel on how people who defect from North Korea are traitors to the "PEOPLE" of North Korea because they have have benefited from what amounts to the fallacy of the "Social Contract", yada, yada, yada. I found that was pretty ironic and funny to listen to coming straight from a North Korean communist party member and in turn being reminded of Elizabeth Warren's own rant about the "Social Contract". LOL

Ummmm.....cuzz he sends these people to work to what amounts as indentured slave laborers for 10 years stretches with very little pay if any and they have basically no say as the "People" and the "State" reap the greater rewards from all their labor and if they refuse or try to defect they are then punished for violating that "Social Contract" comrade.
 
I thought it was interesting that the wood ends up in England. Anyway, I am morbidly fascinated by anything North Korea, watched this a few days ago but should have posted it. There was also a NatGeo documentary on NK, aired a few days ago. It was originally from 2007.

Basically, Lisa Ling partnered up with a Tibetan team of eye doctors who travelled to NK to do cataract surgeries on the blind. The two most interesting parts were how the 1000 or so patients reacted after having their eye sight restored, and what the former guard of a labor camp had to say.

As soon as the wraps came off, every patient looked straight at the nearest poster of Dear Leader and wept in gratitude, not so much as thinking of thanking the doctor.

The prison camp guard who defected drew a map of the 20,000+ camp. People go in their to die, rarely ever leaving alive. Anytime someone is even remotely suspected of questioning Dear Leader, their entire extended families vanish to these type of camps. The guards are taught that the prisoners are NOT human, and treat them as such.

Process of Job Outsourcing in NK is the very same as i n US - Corporations get all the money instead of US citizens, who've lost jobs due to outsourcing.
In NK, Goverment is The Corporation.

Process is the same, difference in currency. US dollar was made as hard currecy. Today, because of temps of printing of US currency, it's getting close to Zimbabwe Dollars - tons of money being printed without coverage of goods made in that particular country.

Difference between US and NK - just unequally created currency
 
It's sort of odd that right-wingers actually adopt the North Korean ideology in smaller doses and defend it like they do, but only reject it in the larger doses.

So supporting the powerful corporatocracy to get cheaper and cheaper labor and take the profits for themselves is good, but make the corporatocracy not only effectively control the government but be one and the same as in North Korea, and they suddenly say how terrible the same things - just stronger - are.

It's about valuing individuals and prosperity for all. The right rails against the people here.

The social contract of Elizabeth Warren refers to the obligation of the people at the top to the rest of us, not our obligation to the financial elite, at all.

What you apparently fail to appreciate is that it's not the Russian govt using Korean labor, but rather Russian corporatists, whom Russians refer to as the Oligarchs. Obviously, they don't have much of a social contract with their laborers at all, but rather a contract w/ the N Korean govt to deliver cut timber for a price. Like corporatists everywhere, they don't even want to know how that's accomplished, at all. Their profit margin has to be enormous.
 
All those pictures put Siberia in a better light, Summer in Siberia is almost pleasant. Siberia in Winter may be a cold day in hell but little better. Are we documenting the sins of North Korea, or Russia and does it matter?

Point granted, Kim Jong IL was a rotten human being and a disaster for North Korea.

But now Kim Jong IL is dead, dead dead, and beyond all human ability to punish. Leaving me to question the motivation of this thread. As we can only hope future North Korean leadership will be better. FANNING THE PAST SINS OF A DEAD LEADER LEADS US NO WHERE.

As we the still living can warm the cockles of our heart by maintaining a ever lasting hatred of Kim Jung IL, but why we should hate the poorly led North Korean people baffles me.

Netflix has some really interesting documentaries on NK. Some country sent in doctors to perform routine eye surgery on North Korean citizens. As they took off their bandages, they all got up and bowed before a picture of Kim (forget which one), saying they'd work harder because he restored their sight.

Another is about a US soldier who went over the border and became a state propaganda tool. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, but that's a hell of place to run off to.

Umm... North Koreans often volunteer to go to the Siberian slave labor camps, they actually see it as a better option than remaining in NK. Pretty shitty when the gulag is seen as an improved career path over what you got back home and food better than dirt and tree bark.

If you spoke ill of NK while there you'd get to go to a reeducation camp if you're lucky, a gulag to work until you die if you're not.

I finally saw this. I thought the video was interesting but ultimately unsatisfying, as they didn't really get to see a great deal or get a great deal of information out of the NKs. This was foreshadowed by the substantial time spent talking about the train and drinking and the thugs. I wondered what substance they'd ultimately relay.

I recommend that documentary on the eye surgery. You can't come away from that without realizing a lot about the real nature of North Korea's absolute brainwashed culture.

This is the documentary I mentioned earlier in the thread, I highly recommended for anyone interested in NK. Complete with interviews from defectors too.

Thanks for posting a link to it, I should have done so myself. It is on netflix too.
 
I know this is off topic. But every time someone on this forum advocates forcing people who get government help or "illegal" aliens to work or that they should be placed in camps I think of North Korea and Stalinist Russia.
 
Conservatives are mainly jealous of the power Kim had. In reality the methods of ruling are the same besides small aspects of ideological rhetoric in reality. The USA is fast becoming the same kind of shithole and already has gulags for profit at a scale far surpassing any post-Stalinist country as far as incarceration.


Their predictable answer? Move to somewhere already more advanced when it comes to the conservative agenda except with what they perceive as a different political bent.

when in reality they are the ones pushing the reactionary totalitarian mindset.
