North Korean Siberian Labor Camps!

Could you give a little cliffs? I really can't watch it at work, but I'm interested in the subject.

I absolutely love your sig, as a Chesterton fan. 🙂 My sig is one of his poems. Where'd you find it?

Basically North Korea is sending its citizens to work as little more than slaver laborers for years or even decades in the forests in the middle of Siberia. Not even people who are political prisoners or whatever, just regular North Koreans. It's pretty incredibly shitty.

On a side note the other video I mentioned, the vice guide to North Korea, is totally awesome in and of itself if you are at all interested by North Korea.

I love info on NK like this so will watch the vid.

If you're not a political revolutionary they can make you one for no reason and then off you go to the camps. Every member of government in that country should be marched into an active volcano.

There is no distinction to be made in North Korea, they are all slaves to the government men with guns.

While you're right to a certain extent, I more meant that it the government was sending people it wasn't even angry with or whatever to these insanely shitty lives. Not that it would excuse their actions either way, but it just shows you what contempt the government holds for even citizens in good standing.

For whom are the slaves actually working? The Russians? The NK government (which for some reason is in Siberia...)? What are they working on? Surely the Russian government must have some complicity in this.

It's not a matter of standing. Those people are government property to be made proper use of. Like cattle.

Standing most certainly makes a difference there. In fact your standing vis a vis the government is the single largest factor in how good your life is. If you are trying to say that the lives of the lumber cutters and the lives of high ranking party officials are the same because they are both slaves to the government... well... I guess. In practice however things are very different.

As I understand it they were originally labor camps for political prisoners but now they are staffed by regular North Koreans. They do work there and the Russians and North Koreans split the profits. The Russian government absolutely is complicit in it, no doubt.

They're working for the NK government. These are wholly autonomous heavy logging camps built and entirely administered by the North Koreans, down to the korean style buildings and rampant propaganda signs everywhere.

The idea, as best I can surmise, is for the NK gov't. to earn extra foreign exchange through the sale to the West of the lumber they harvest, all done on the backs of the miserably provided for, nearly unpaid, yet endlessly compliant citizens of its own country.

All this happens in such remote parts of Siberia that even the Russians don't care about, [edit] but obviously with the Rooskies knowledge and complicity. They probably get a small cut, but allow it mostly to help out Best Korea with resources they themselves wouldn't otherwise bother with.

Watch the vid when you have time, it's both small-scale (on the human level) and large-scale (geopolitical atrocity in progress) fascinating, to use but one applicable adjective.

Don't remember where or how I (recently) stumbled upon it, but when I did, I knew right away that is was my new sig! Chesterton has chops!

I'm spiritual and non-atheist in my beliefs, under which I am open to a non-corporeal, non-prescriptive sense of the divine, but the sig expertly captures my abhorrence of the lumbering ugliness perpetrated by the entrenched and self-serving bureaucracy that dominates most religions.

Vice is awesome...

Yeah cliffs : N. Korea selling citizens into slavery in siberia. Locals in siberia can't get jobs because there are korean slaves out in the woods doing the logging and other work.

We have slaves in the US to, they are called Mexican illegals. Mexico is complacent as they move up here and work for pennies while the US government bends over backwards to keep them here. Cheap labor is a grand thing.

Yup.

I'm not sure if you're being serious, or if you actually think there's no difference.

Mexico doesn't ship people here. Their economy sucks and they have to leave to find better employment.

Just like when our dollar crashes, alot of people will see the grass greener north of the border in canada. Which would be both sad and hilarious at the same time.

He's freaking hard to read. As much as I like him, I've yet to finish a single one of his books (althought I've come close to finishing Orthodoxy). He packs whole paragraphs of meaning into single sentences, in very witty words with heavy use of metaphors, and it's just freaking difficult.

Im not being entirely serious. Its more a dig at our government which does zero about illegals but its offtopic and it is in a different class altogether than what N.korea has going on.

Just like Nazi Death Camps.

We hope for reunification of the Korean Peninsula and a new era of prosperity for the people of North and South Korea.

As long as Red China is mostly pulling NK strings, I dont see that happening for a while. Dont get me wrong though, I would absolutely love to see it happen. The last thing Red China wants is yet another western style country in its backyard. Lastly of course, Red China loves having the NK issue be a thorn in the side of the U.S.
