The main reason for protracted conflicts in the past is to prevent civilian casualties.

If NK launched a nuclear weapon we would have (I'm guessing) a blank check to bomb the crap out of them.

Imagine us going on bombing runs, cruise missile subs launching around the clock, maybe even a nuclear weapon of our own (heck, a large one could knock out most of the civilized North Korean cities infrastructure).

If we HAD TO harm NK's civilians, we could take out the country in a day.

Did you know there are tank traps and pill boxes already in place?

What about our tactical nuclear rounds?

Every idiot liberal claims every punk country has great artillery, or are so tough that Americans will be killed like flies. This is a country that is a one step away from eating its own children to keep from starving to death. In a protracted battle they would starve to death in two weeks. Get a grip on reality. After the USA uses cruise missles to destroy all the bridges and military complexes and anti aircraft installations, we could carpet bomb them in two weeks.

I don't know. I was stationed in S. Korea and we were told that we are a speed bump for N. Korea and that Seoul would be destroyed by artillery before the US could mobilize and mount a response. US forces actually stationed in Korea are just to slow them down as much as possible.

Technically the UN is still at war with North Korea. So the USA is still at war and still has forces, with Tanks and heavy artillery on the ground with bomber support from the phillipines and Japan and an Air Force Base in the southern part of South Korea.

I think most people dont realize just how small South Korea is. It is smaller than the Florida Peninsula and has about 10 times the population. I am just guessing on the population. Seems like most koreans have immigrated to the USA.

No one can attack South korea with a nuke without killing lots of North Koreans and maybe China, Japan and some surrounding Islands in Indo China or other locations.

FYI - there are no more bases in the PI

If a war did start, it would be bloodier than anything we've seen in our lifetimes. Pray it doesn't happen. It seems it would be a nasty start with the N troops pushing far south towards Seoul, taking huge casualties (and also causing them,) then a huge bloodbath driving them back and bombing into oblivion.

Then the real shitwork starts dealing with the millions of brainwashed zombies aka NK civilians.

Its hard to imagine the N reconciling with anyone. 50+ years of constant brainwashing and institutionalized abuse. They've got to be the biggest headcases on the planet.

Seems like the best thing to do is to stave off the war and try to force a collapse of the govt thru sanctions and starvation. Hundreds of thousands would die in NK, but seems like the best worst option. Let China spend its money dealing with the mess. We can help out just enough that it lets us have some influence in the outcome.

You don't think that North Korea will use the bomb if we do that?
Not if somebody else set us ups the bomb first.

Nice morale booster ;) "You guys are effectively cannon fodder. When the fighting starts, you're screwed."

I was told the same thing by my CO at both of my assignments over there.
