Normally I would dismiss their threats as just being threats, but a couple different events have occurred lately that make me wonder.

Clinton made them very angry in the meeting over the ship sinking.
More sanctions.
It is believed that Kim Jong is on his way out any day or is possibly dead.

What is an about to be replaced dictator going to do to make sure people never forget him ? For him he has nothing to lose.

North Korea's National Defense Commission threatened Saturday to wage a "sacred war" against the United States and South Korea, if the two nations go ahead with scheduled naval maneuvers beginning Sunday in the Sea of Japan.

Pyongyang said it will respond to the sea exercises based on the country's "nuclear deterrence."

North Korea routinely makes similar threats when South Korea and the U.S. hold joint military exercises. The latest aggressive comments come amid increased tensions on the peninsula over the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on the North.

Professor Shigemura says there is deep symbolism to the unveiling of the dear leader's first statue.

"Kim Jong-il's statue has officially appeared, this is the first time. Before, Kim Jong-il prohibited making his statue," he said.

"So it means that Kim Jong-il will be losing his power, or the successor is coming."

The unveiling of the statue could be interpreted a few ways - that Kim Jong-il is preparing to step down and hand power to his third son; that he is gravely ill and his inner circle is bracing for his death; or, most unlikely, that he is already dead.

It is no secret that the dear leader is not in great shape.

Two years ago he suffered a stroke which left him partly paralysed.

And depending on who you believe, he is afflicted with everything from diabetes, to heart disease, to liver cancer to high blood pressure.

So why can't megalomaniac despots in North Korea erect statues to themselves, like megalomaniac despots everywhere else in the world?

According to Professor Toshimitsu Shigemura, North Korea's adherence to Confucianism and its core value of filial piety mean North Korea's despot normally would not erect statues to himself.

"Under the Confucianist values, son can make his father's statue, but son cannot make his statue," he said.

Even South Korean intelligence is taking this seriously, with Seoul's Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoting one spy as saying that the unveiling of the bronze of Kim Jong-il signifies the end of his reign.

The problem with that assessment is that every time the dear leader has been dispatched by pundits, spies, and specialists, he has returned from the proverbial grave as unpredictable as ever.

North Korea says it will use its "nuclear deterrent" in response to joint US-South Korean military exercises this weekend.

Pyongyang was ready to launch a "retaliatory sacred war" at any time, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

"The army and people of the DPRK will start a retaliatory sacred war of their own style based on nuclear deterrent any time necessary in order to counter the US imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces deliberately pushing the situation to the brink of a war," it added.

North Korea's delegation spokesman at the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) regional forum said the exercises were an example of 19th century "gunboat diplomacy".

"It is a threat to the Korean peninsula and the region of Asia as a whole," he said

The war games - which begin on Sunday - will involve the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, 20 other ships and submarines, 100 aircraft and 8,000 personnel.

China has criticised the plans and warned against any action which might "exacerbate regional tensions".

But Japan is sending four military observers, in an apparent endorsement of the drills.

The US announced on Wednesday that it was to impose new sanctions on North Korea, aimed at halting nuclear proliferation and the import of luxury goods.

If NK provokes a real American attack, without Chinas support (they have stated and restated that they want no part of helping NK) they wouldn't stand a chance.

SK will be rubble though...

In this case if NK wants to get physical over some exercises, then bring it. We shouldn't even try diplomacy, just flatten them completely if they try anything.

NK leadership might want to think about that for just a minute or two.....

You'd have to wonder what would happen if it came to armed conflict... SK would be pretty destroyed in short order, but once NK was invaded, what percentage of the population would be so brainwashed and devoted to the regime that they would fight tooth and nail against us, vs the percentage that realizes how terrible their country is and would fight tooth and nail for us?

You'd have to imagine that once the majority of the population realizes what they've been subjected to their whole lives, once they see what the rest of the world is like, they'd change their minds pretty quick.

Strange is the way China told the USA to not do the exercises because they didn't want to make things worse. It almost sounds like China has lost their influence with NK. We are sending 8,000 troops , that is a lot for an exercise.

If I was a conspiracy nut I might think someone was using an exercise press release as a cover for a takeover.

If its not this it will be something else. I hate to see waht they do next though. hell (the evidence) it looks as if they sunk a SK boat.

8000 troops isnt enough to hold one city from NK... they have the 4th largest standing army on earth.

I don't think any country has any influence on that psychotic regime. It would be nice if the rest of the world stand up to those nuts. Why does it always have to be the USA saving the fucking world.

I wish we knew where there nukes were and be done with it. They are the worlds ass clowns with dangerous weapons.

Christ, wtf for?

I'm not familiar with why we have that many. But, I confirmed that there are 11 active carriers. Furthermore, I believe 1 under construction (the Gerald Ford), and another has been ordered. The one under construction and the one on order are replacing two of the active carriers.

Iraq had the 4th largest standing army on earth at the time of the Gulf War(s). You saw how well that went for them.

NK could potentially devastate Seoul with artillery, but without Chinese intervention, the US Air Force and Navy would finish them off in a week, maybe a month, tops. Make no mistake, the US military has no problems conquering an opposing force; the problem is occupation and in the case of NK, I doubt very seriously that we'd be opposed on an occupation like we were in Iraq.

EDIT: And I doubt very seriously that China would intervene, as it would have FAR too much to lose in a conflict over a country that in the grand scheme of things, just doesn't matter to the world and provides no value to China.

Tuesday is July 27th, the day the korean war ended in 1953. The NK propaganda site is full of talk about how they defeated the USA then.
http://www.korea-dpr.com/ocn/

Day of great victory

When the United States forced a war on the DPRK, there were few people who thought the latter, less than two years since its founding, would emerge victorious in the war.

The US, boasting of being “the strongest” in the world as it experienced no defeat in over 110 wars, committed to the Korean front one-third of its ground force, one-fifth of its air force, the greater part of the Pacific Fleet plus troops of its 15 vassal states, the south Korean army and the remnants of the defeated Japanese army and squandered US$ 165 billion in value in those days.

The Korean War, however, was recorded in history as the first-ever defeat of the US.

During the three-year-long war three commanders of the “United Nations Forces,” all American generals, were replaced and the US much-touted “invincible divisions” met their tragic end.

July 27 was etched in the memory of the Korean people as the day of a great victory that they defended the freedom and independence of the country by smashing to the smithereens the myth of the “mightiness” of the US.
So many things pointing to this going bad.

NK won't do sh*t, they are a wet paper tiger at best, a huge army of rabble consisting of a nearly starved army and pathetic technology. Everyone knows this, most of all them, which is why they are bluster only. They will never unequivocally attack in a way that cannot be denied in any manner and actually pits them against a modern military.

No they don't want a fight, they want to maintain power and the upper echelons will lose it immediately if they engage in a real war. They could have started a fight a million times since the cessation of proper combat decades ago but haven't.

NK's MO is to scare people into think they are insane and will attack, launch nukes, etc. but nothing in human nature says it will happen and that's why it hasn't. It would be their death knell.
Christ, wtf for?
Just because.

I think they're shuttering at least one, though; I don't think the US will have more than 11 in the next few years but go back and forth around that general figure.

Without china, NK would get their asses handed to them. SK has like 1000x more money to spend + UN + US support. Only if china gets into the mix would this possibly have a chance of going in NK favor. (The loss of NK is far less important to china today then it was 60 years ago)

Yeah, I think Enterprise is the first to go and then probably the Nimitz. I don't believe the Navy has received authorization to maintain any more than 11 CBGs, but I could be wrong.
