N. Korea + World Cup: where are they, have they ever been in it before and I hear the sanctions were put on them by Bush because of frauds in currency exchange? now they're spending a lot of money on nuclear programs and are still not part of the U.N. council and don't want to push with talks.

and why is the United States on rock bottom for something like soccEr in the world cup? I mean, you'd figure they'd be at the very top, as they are with their politics, military, economics and infrastucture of education and academics?

I guess it could be political if you want it to be..

Ok, I'm probably just being a typically ignorant American about this, but didn't the Koreas decide to play as a single team this year? I remember there being something sports related they were collaborating together on. Maybe it was the Olympics or something. I don't know.

i doubt it considering South Korea is a team. I dont think North Korea would agree to playing under the South's name

Because the rest of the world lives and breathes FOOTBALL, whereas we prefer a full-time channel devoted to golf to "soccor"?

Thanks for the spelling correction. I'm sure everyone else hasn't mispelled a single word at 2:30 in the morning.

They had to for the Olympics under the name "Korea" however it's defintely only South Korea playing in the World Cup.

Not sure about that but back in 2002 they were talking about having North Korea host a few games (didn't happen), the games were already split between South Korea and Japan so that would have been a logistical nightmare.

But South Korea is sending World Cup coverage to North Korea for free, just like they did in 2002.

Ah, ok, that must be it. I couldn't recall. I just knew it was for one of the big world sports events. I think I got thrown off by them being called the Korea Republic instead of South Korea.

This is about soccer. Not about politics. The world doesn't revolve around the US, do you expect them to be the best at everything?

I should be a street magician or something. Before clicking your profile link I knew you had to be from Canada. Why? Where else can you hear the familiar whine of someone with an inferiority complex. Hey, we all know the world revolves around Canada. With your massive population of 30 million and all. Furthermore, World Cup is about nationalism and even some politics, so why are you attacking the US for it? Is Canada even in the World Cup? Ooops.

To be fair in both we did not have the best playing.

Also it seemed in both (olympics and WBC) what few "pros" there was just did not fvcking care. it seemed they did not have any pride in what they were doing. Wich kinda made me upset. Other countries the players were not as talented but played 100% the whole game. where the US players just seemed to show up and not really put a effort in.

In Basketball, there were guys like Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Lebron James, Tim Duncan and the like playing which are elite players. In Baseball, there were guys like Arod, Jeter, Derek Lee, Roger Clemens, Jake Peavy and the like playing which are also elite players. Regardless, the US teams don't seem to have the discipline nor drive to win like other teams do. Talent can only take you so far.

somehow i think soccer was never popular because it doesn't get any national TV coverage at all... why would they broadcast soccer when they can play NBA, NFL and MLB where they make millions off commercials from the 20 timeouts or whatever inning break they get? if you ask me, soccer is indefinitely more exciting than baseball, yet baseball is so popular in the US.

and i doubt north korea will play in the world cup while kim jung il is in power... how can he stand his mighty country losing in soccer, or anything at all?

Why would we be the best at soccer? And what's with this mentality that the US has to be the best at everything? Can't we just be proud of being the best at some things? We're the best at American football :p

If you're in a foreign country that's hosting a cup match during the euro-cup or the world cup, you'll know why the US is not the best at soccer. US fans don't care about soccer for whatever reason. Personally, I find the game kind of boring. I have the same problem with football, there's a down and the entire game stops for 5 minutes. RUGBY on the other hand is awesome because the game gets going again much more quickly after someone gets tackled.

First of all, how do you define the very top in economics? By my measurement, Canada has us beat in the sense that they run a surplus yet still have an expensive public healthcare system running. That's impressive even if their international economics aren't that good. They can afford not to have a large military because A) The US is to the south and B) Canada has virtually no enemies, so that part of the budget is freely spent on other programs.

Also, from what I've read, we're nowhere near the top in education. In fact, we're one of the last nations to still charge high tuition prices for our universities. And in case you haven't been paying attention, our public education system is badly in need of an overhaul. There would be plenty of funding if we cut some of the fat from the system. An English class in the middle school down the road from me can't afford books. That should be a hint that maybe our public education system needs fixing.
