North Korea Asks for Peace Treaty

Read the article you linked-North Korea didn't ask for a peace treaty, they demanded one.

This is the same country that did two major unprovoked attacks on South Korea just last year-secretly bombing a SK ship, killing 50 sailors, and bombing a SK island killing civilians and destroying homes.

This is the same North Korea whose only consistency is breaking treaties or agreements whenever it is to their moementary advantage.

This is the same North Korea that straves its populance but goes all out on a nuclear weapons program.

Letting down our guard regarding North Korea without very significant and verifiable changes would be a huge mistake.

It would make sense if Best Korea were a normal, fairly rational nation.
They are anything but that.
The only reason they would put this forward is because they think they can use it for leverage or get something else out of it.

Sure, as soon as they disarm, they can have peace.

NK claims that they will not disarm because they are afraid of the US attacking them again.

That is why they need the treaty and the US out of Korea.:\

I also have ocean front property in AZ if anyone is interested.

Haha, exactly.

We (US and Korea) should just tell them then, if they won't disarm, "No thanks, we'll take an armed stalemate over a peace treaty with you armed."

I'd rather have a known enemy than a fake friend.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea demanded Wednesday that the United States sign a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War, as a senior North Korean diplomat visited New York to negotiate ways to restart six-nation nuclear disarmament talks.

That's funny. What are they going to do if we refuse to sign a peace treatyt? Attack us?

They want this "peace" treaty because they will never make it through the coming winter without massive international aid.

While millions of NK's citizens starve..... great idea there!

Not our problem. It's their government's choice to spend on defense while people starve. Noone is going to invade them, they are not worth occupying. It's like an AIDS stricken whore who's afraid of getting raped.

Leave Africa out of this.....

That or they want it because they're getting close to a nuke and think a peace treaty will give them one more political barrier to an armed intervention.

If that's true then I would expect another major violation before fall-missle test, nuclear explosion test, something like that.

Right now I think they will extend professional courtesy to the teaparty republicans and hold off action.

Actually this is our problem because we have thousands of troops there. South Korea is also our ally. The interesting thing is no one believed the Soviet union would tear down the Berlin Wall, but it happened. Reagan just asked them to tear it down and they did. I think now might be a good time to put it to a test.

Just tell them to destroy all their long range artillery that is pointed south and we will take all our troops and go home.

We have to believe the impossible is possible.

Africa is like a whole nother continent dude?

Here is a Map of the general area:

Couple of things; First the Soviets were not insane.
Second it was the people of Germany who tore down the wall not the Soviet controlled government.
Third, frankly I wouldn't trust the NK government to do what they say they would. They have shown many times in the past they can't be trusted.

Countries around the world need to dump more money into research related to defensive military equipment. Once we figure out how to completely shield South Korea from rockets and bombs and stuff like that, we can turn NK into a parking lot and the problem will be solved 😀

no oil interest no care about human rights violations.

Isn't the USA one of the largest sources of humanitarian aid for North Korea?

But more to your point, I would have zero problem with a targeted assasination of Kim Jong Ill. In fact I was thinking about something the other day, after reading up on the miniaturization of UAV's.

How long will it be until a small UAV exists that is the size of a bug? Imagine flying that right up Kim Jong's nose and pressing the kill button.

Let us imagine for a second if NK's brutal regime was wiped out, and the country was placed under the command of the UN. NK's citizenry would have to gradually be introduced to the 20th century, let alone the current. I can't imagine what it would be like to take your average NK farmer for a walk in Seoul or Tokyo.

Would killing the leader even do anything? Maybe the guy in charge of the military is a meth head too and he decides to start world war 3 just for the lulz.
