Good lord. Could you imagine? Walking around near the border and then getting kidnapped by the Canadian government?

forcing japanese citizens to teach culture to north korean spies... wow!

A senior Japanese government official attributed Pyongyang's change in attitude ? and its willingness to admit its criminal past ? to the "very tough stance of the Bush administration" toward North Korea, as well as growing economic difficulties. "The North Koreans clearly felt the need to adjust their relationships with neighboring countries," he said.
interesting... thats pretty much what the soviets faced in the early 80s...

Ah well, the Japanese took almost 60 years to admit that foreign women had been abused as sex slaves in WO II, and still refuse to pay them money in compensation. Guess they don't have all that much to whine about.

CHeers,
Aquaman

I wonder if they'll say what their quality of life was like? I mean, were they starved, etc, and forced to comply? Or did they live in relatively benign conditions?

not to mention the fact that some of the soldiers in WWII kept Chinese civilians heads on display in their own homes.

:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q

Based on my interpretation of the article, it sounds like those who didn't cooperate got killed.

Six of the kidnap victims had died, while four are still alive and one is missing.

It's like a bad version of this one comedy movie where the Soviet Union kidnaps two American idiots and tricks them into training Soviet spies in modern American culture.

EDIT: More info link

Looks like the families also are wondering how their kidnapped kin died so young.

hey i hate the japanese as much as the next chinese guy for what they did in WWII, but these are civilians we are talking about here. civilians that probably weren't even involved in WWII.... i don't think we should just say "meh" just because the poor guy's ancestors did crappy stuff.

i mean, what if some native american kidnapped you? should we just go "well that sucks, but it's not that big of a deal if you look at what white folk have done to indians"?

well that's past.. you know that people in north korea are so poor that some of them have to risk getting arrested by police and flee to china just to get food?

i don't buy the argument that the japanese deserved this, you could also then make the argument that america deserved sept 11 for killing millions of indians. or participating in a slave trade that resulted in 11million enslaved, and 22million dying on the way.

well if you can be upset over crimes 20-30 years ago by NK then you can be just as upset by crimes committed 60 years ago by the japanese on a magnitude hundreds of times greater.

never said it wasn't worse, just a foolish argument to say. HEY, you did it too and you were worse! when you try to justify this stuff, it just makes it more likely to happen again.
