normal temp for phenom II?

I have a quick question about the temps on my phenom II x4 965. When I encode videos using handbrake the cpu temp spikes to 65-68*c and stays there till the process is done.
Is this normal for a 965 using the stock cooler or should I be worried? To me it seems awfully hot but I'm by no means an expert when it comes to cpu's. It is not oc'ed and the case is vented fairly well.
Any advice would be appreciated.

it seems normal for a stock cooler (that is crap and you should replace if you have the $ and space in your case)

though Phenom IIs should be kept below 65C when stressed...

That puppy is runnin way hot, get yourself a decent cooler and you probably won't even pass mid 40's at full load.

Intel or AMD , 60's c and 70's acceptable.

recommended 50's c and 60's c ...on FULL LOAD.

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys. I'll stop encoding until I can get a decent cooler.
Any recommendations for a good cooler at a decent price that will fit inside a MicroATX mid tower?

Your going to want to get something that doesn't make a lot of noise. For 3Ghz the stock HSF would do. You can get third party, I recommend go to www.thermaltake.com and see what they have. Their stuff is stable and quiet. Then go to www.amazon.com and buy it. You shouldnt spend more then 30 to 40 dollars. But once again make shure its not a jumbo HSF , cuz some of those have no fan control and it sounds like a jet. The only thing that should make noise in your comp is the GPU fan @ 100 percent when gaming or full load encoding. It should be a 1300rpm to 3000rpm with fan control. While on desktop you want it spinning @ 1300rpm. The HS might be huge, but I can assure you it will fit.

It does appear to be running a bit hot. A few things, read up on AMD's spec sheet on the max spec temps, they are usually 60-65C depending on the product. Also, AMD does not publish calibration information nor do they factory calibrate the on die thermal sensors, so it is really anyone's guess if the reported temps are accurate, the real test of a hot AMD CPU is does it throttle, if so then you are running too hot.

Gat a good after market cooler regardless, it will work much better than he stock HSF.

You don't need to stop, the CPU has built in mechanisms to throttle down if it gets too hot. You don't need to worry about ruining or damaging the CPU.

Side note -- using a cooler different than the stock cooler actually voids an AMD warranty :). How strange is that?

65-68 sounds way too hot, so you should look into a better cooler to avoid thermal throttling.

My 965 (non-OC) is typically stable around 53-55 C in Prime95 using the Noctua C12P-SE14with the fan speed set to variable (hovers around 1200 rpm.)

Going over 55ºC for long periods isn't recommended.

A CM Hyper 212+ or a Xigmatek Gaia are cheap and good coolers for it.

I use a Xigmatek Gaia on an 555BE unlocked to X4 @3.6GHz and rarely hit 40ºC. At the moment, being winter and all, it is mostly @28-32ºC range. It is much quieter as well.

If you gotta work just pop the side panel off. That usually decreases temps until you can get a new cooler. Also, when was the last time you used some canned air to clean out the heatsink? Folks can get some excellent results just by cleaning out the dust bunnies.

I'm using a xigmatek loki in a smaller midtower. Might still be a rebate deal on it......$5.- shipped (that is if the rebate comes through). I've used it on a phenom ii x4 955be OC'd to 3.9 and it stayed below 60 celcius full load. My current OC'd CPU (see sig) it keeps around 50 celsius full load.
