Normal / Good temperature for an Athlon XP 1800+ ?

just wondering what a normal stable temp is for an athlon 1800+ like the topic says.. its not overclocked or anything.. just curious.. thanks.

with which heatsink?

id say with retail probably 50-60C full load is probably normal

to test, download prime95

run it for about 12-15hrs and if it errors out within that time its not stable

check the temperature, if its really high thats probably the cause if its not overclocked

it has the retail hsf.. during normal usage it was at 53 degrees celcius.. so i guess thats fine? im only running 1 80mm antec case fan, in the antec case.. there are 2 mounts in the case for fans.. 1 under the power supply, and one at the front bottom of the case.. right now im running the rear fan on intake and dont have a fan for the front yet.. once i get a new fan you think i should runn the front on intake, back on exhaust? sorry for the newbie questions..

yes low front pushing cool air into the case
mid rear pushing warm/hot air out of the case

maybe right now try your rear fan as an exhaust, expel some of the hot air inside

thanks again for the info.. ill just turn it around when i buy another fan.. and do like you said.. intake on the front lower, exhaust top rear.. the chips holding strong at 52-53 right now, so its ok

by the way are these antec fans im using good?

34cfm @30dba is a pretty good combination

some who dont care about noise at all (like myself) would use something with a bit more airflow
but for most that is a nice fan

higher cfm=higher airflow


if you want to find the absolute max temp, run prime95 torturetest for even 30min (it will reach max temp by then)
you can run it in the background while doing whatever you want

Heat is a prime concern. I watercool without a dedicated fan (just the 2 fans in my PowMax 500 watt psu pulling air thru a 120mm radiator mounted on a blowhole) and my XP1800 @ 1672 runs no sweat @ 31c idle/38c load.

Used to get 49c with a PAL 8045 and 46c with a CoolerMaster heat pipe. The freakin fan noise was driving me up the wall. Now I can stand it. Next step is to get rid of the chipset fan. Got a (cough) Celeron hs w/out fan that will just fit.

i think im just going to get another fan and call it a day.. im getting a new intel mobo and p4 2.53 soon anways, so i dont wanna get to fancy.. haha.. i hear the p4 chips create less heat than the athlon xps? this true?
