http://www.nordichardware.com/news/...o-be-presented-in-london-on-december-5th.html Several sites are reporting this, so I take the news as truth. They're introducing the new family of chips and shipping will also be in December but reviews, benchmarks, and NDA won't be lifted until sometime in January.

The event AMD is holding is taking place in London. Coincidentally, all of AMD's mobile radeon hd7000 code-names are of U.K. locations. So, and this is just speculation on my part, they are unfortunately introducing only the mobile parts in December, and desktop parts will come at some point afterwords. Which would also mean the top tier hd7900 series chip will not be shipping at the same time as the chips they are introducing/shipping soon. I am fully aware that mobile GPU's are the exact same chips as the desktop GPU's, but my guess is the first allotment of manufactured chips are going to notebooks.

No other news about which performance tiers are coming out first.

Source in topic title please, if this is being reported in multiple places there may be truth to it but oftentimes they're all reporting on the same "leaked" message board post or rumor.

Plus fudzilla = zero credibility. We'll find out in a few short days either way.

Type it into google. There are literally a DOZEN sources. This is not a rumor, and I am not going to put a dozen sources into the title.

False rumour. Been denied by one of the biggest online hardware retailers in the UK. Not only they not coming on the 5th but they aren't coming in 2011.

lol. you know they copy each other right?

i'm not saying it's true or false, but saying its true because dozens of shady websites says so doesn't make it so.

btw, they all say, ..."according to nordichardware".....

All this is, is an announcement of an announcement. I don't see why it would be made up. No actual products are being tested or released - it's just AMD saying "we're ready to ship our chips to AIB's, and here it is working in action."

Despite all the absurd rumors floating around, I'll believe this one. But since it's been pointed out several times, I'll update the OP to link to nordichardware.

They're just excited to talk about something that doesn't have a "bull" or "dozer" in the title...

What about "derp"?

I'm itching to upgrade from my 5850, though it's served me well for the past 2 years, more than I initially expected. However, I think I'd rather make the switch from AMD to Intel first.

AMD kept the unified clock concept and given that Radeon HD 7970 is based on fully configured "Tahiti XT" GPU, 2048 cores (32 Compute Units) operate at 1GHz clock. 3GB of GDDR5 memory operates in Quad Data Rate mode i.e. 1.37GHz ODR ("effective 5.5GHz"). This results with record video memory bandwidth for a single GPU - 264GB/s.

The HD7950 is based on "Tahiti Pro" and packs 30 Compute Units for 1920 cores operating at 900MHz. The number of ROPs decreased to 60, while Texture units naturally reduced to 120 (as every CU connects to 2 ROPs and 4 TMUs). Our sources did not disclose if the memory controller is still 384-bit or a 256-bit one, but the memory clock was decreased to 1.25GHz, i.e. the same clock as previous gen models. Should 384-bit controller stay, the clock should be good for 240GB/s of bandwidth.

Both products are expected to be released on CES 2012 in Las Vegas, NV, occupying the $349-449 price bracket.

oh god! that bandwidth is enourmous

if kepler is a die shrink of fermi, nvidia might get screwed

If those specs are true, the 7950 is too close to 7970 specs. Way too close. They have to be priced very close otherwise the xx50 is going to make its big brother redundant like whats happened since 5850s.

That means there will be a huge price gap from 79xx to 78xx (mid-range) for NV to slot right in.

Just read that. If this is on point, with all that power on board, it sounds like AMD is leaving behind the small core strategy and is going to be releasing a big die monster for 7950/7970.

Really looking forward to this release, hopefully it pans out and performs, without being too ridiculous with heat and noise.

Fingers crossed the high end cards are on shelves for January like these leaks are claiming. If they do well I am expecting to get more performance out of two 7970s than I currently do out of the three cards I have. I'd like to 'downgrade' from three cards to two and get more frames. The performance of three cards is nice, but I think I would be at a perfect level of performance with 30% more power than I have now from only two cards  Also want to see 3GB of VRAM as standard on these cards if the 384 bus is accurate, not 1.5.

Then I can wait for the game developers to catch up to the hardware. :D

Rumored 7970 vs 6970:
~1/3 more shaders and texture fillrate.
~doubled ROPs <-- huge increase, its going to be crazy good for 1600p and multi-monitor gaming!
~>1/2 memory bandwidth increase

Add to that, faster clock speeds and the big unknown currently: GCN architecture. Even if its not an improvement, raw specs alone puts 7970 ~50% faster than 6970 already. Add in efficiencies with the new cores, I'm expecting a 80% improvement. This puts it close to 6990 territory, as per recent suggestions from AIB partners.

Given the little difference between 7970(XT) vs 7950(PRO) I would get the PRO if it has 1.5gb vram and OC the crap out of it, getting amazing bang for buck.

I have been waiting for the new cards on the new process all year. The problems with 32nm delayed potential upgrades and now the 28nm process jump is hopefully going to yield some pretty impressive gains.

Its a real shame it doesn't look like NVidia is releasing in similar time scales, because ideally I want the biggest single core I can to start with and then add the second card to that. Getting a 7970 might prove to be the worst choice in the grand scheme of 2012 graphics cards, but the extra 6-12 months of gaming time on it just means you have no competition for the whole time. That also means its probably going to be mighty expensive on release, it has no equal in the market to force any prices down. They could slot them in above the 6000 series until NVidia releases.

that's what I'm afraid of, I'm afraid we'll see the 7950s stuck with 1.5GB, although if thats the case and they're $400 with a 3GB 7970 @ $500, I'll definitely have less trouble going all-in for the 7970. I have 1.5GB GTX580s in SLI and games like BF3 and Skyrim are already pushing that vram to the limit.

Well You could say NZ is part of the UK and thats the name of their 7900 series.

Soft launch after announcement? I doubt it. They may give us some details and show closed benchmarks, but I doubt we will see any real reviews or releases until 2012. I'm interested in getting all the details for sure though.

Your pricing estimate is pretty good according to rumors. XT back at $500.

Unless they pull a BD, that should mean some serious performance gains.

If they split the difference on XT/PRO based on vram, i wouldn't mind that, it gives a good incentive from users who 1600p or 3 monitor gaming, while the rest will be fine with 1.5gb vram at 1080p. It actually makes sense, because i was struggling to comprehend why the PRO specs are SO close to XT specs it would cannibalize sales without the big vram difference.
