just a comparison..it was in another thread but apparently isnt the same one.....so my bad

Buyer beware...friend at work has a similar model and has experienced 'lockups' with the unit. It creates a loud screetching sound when it locks up and you have to restart the unit and the movie.

Sorry for the threadcap, but I feel any interested buyer that doesn't know this brand should know about the 'quality'.

Just bought one. 44 bucks shipped for this dvd player is a heck of a deal. The phillips was selling for 69 at wallmart yesterday.

i have the philips 642 and the new lg HDMI player (they're virtually identical internally, except the lg obviously has HDMI, and a memory card reader for still pics...)

both are excellent players. play divx's, xvids, any version, sacd's, DVD's, read dvd-r's, +r's, no problems anywhere. remotes are responsive, subtitles work great, players are quiet and solidly built. consistent framerates, picture quality and sound across the board.

get a norcent for 45 or a philips for 69. but I can guarantee you'll be 100% satisfied with the philips.

Any feedback on your impressions of this player so far? Any of the quirks or problems mentioned earlier in this thread?

Thanks

It claims that it has 32 language caption. But in anywhere there website, I could not find what are those 32 languages. I strongly doubt any quality from Norcent while they do not know what to put in their website.

The DVP642 has the advantage of having region free codes for it (no one has found the DP-220 one yet as far as I know). If that is a big deal for you, avoid this player. Other than that, I think it's a good deal. Too bad I have so many R2 and R3 discs, or I'd replace my old Norcent with this in a heartbeat.

I've played with the Philips extensively, upgraded to the latest firmware and for those that say it plays everything... well, you don't watch very much. 2/3 of the material I have doesn't work on the Philips because of Q-Pel, various codecs, etc.

I even bought one for my niece so she could play chinese divx, japanese anime, and downloaded movies and they all choked on the Philips (either saying that there was an unrecognized codec or playing the video or audio poorly).

I haven't played with the Norcent yet so I can't comment, but between the Lite-On and the Philips, the Lite-On plays more material and often plays it more correctly.

Fry's has the Panasonic S47 for $59.95, big price drop! Awesome player, I have one. Check the reviews, everyone loves it. A few dollars more step you up into a whole different league, check it out.
