Isn't there a standard warranty? Pretty sure there is, which means you can send it so M$ for repairs. Check their site for an email or phone # and ask what you have to do.

Ah, thanks. $129 is better than $300-$400! I remember that phone number, clever as it is.

They say its three months but it is really six. That's what a CSR told me before I signed up for the extended plan. So if your box goes for sh*t within six months I'd give 'em a buzz.

I just checked the error codes via the method found here and got the mysterious 0102 "unknown error" code. I also tried, of course, the whole plug and unplug game (including the HDD) with no luck. 18004myxbox it is. :(

Seems like these things are biting the dust left and right.....I don't believe this stuff about a 3% failure rate I've been reading elsewhere. Wonder what the h*ll the problem is. It's not like this is brand new technology.

"If your console has three flashing red lights, press 2". OMG it's an official option in the call-in menu! An automated message gave me all the suggestions for plugging and unplugging, claiming it would fix the problem, ha! Now on hold...

How can they offer that kind of crap warranty? Sure when you get an OEM stuff like CPUs its only 90days, but generally CPUs dont randomly die unless you stupidly overclock it or don't cool it, or its DOA to begin with. When I upgrade my computer I like knowing pretty much anything I buy has at least a 1yr warranty, with up to 5yrs on hard drives (Seagate) which seem like a way bigger chance to fail than most other electronic devices, and lifetime on RAM and some video cards (which still applies when you overclock!). How is the 360 hardware that much different?

Gah! The repair cost is now $139 unless I misheard "Jeff". At least shipping both ways is free of charge. Apparently one receives a fresh 90 day warranty when the thing is repaired, too. I wonder, though, about the data on the HDD. Will I get the same HDD back? I sure hope so!

Edit: apparently I keep the HDD when I pack the thing, wo0t!

The PS2 had a crappy warranty, too, also only 90 days IIRC. Mine broke on the 94th day after I turned it on its side (stopped playing DVD games/movies). I took it apart and cleaned it as some websites indicated, but no luck. So I smashed it with my brand new copy of Metal Gear that I never got to play.

If I bought mine @ Costco would I be able to return it there?

Don't they have some awesome return policy?

Edit: It's not broken yet, just wondering since I picked mine up on launch day last year...

if you really get 6 months i hope mine completes it's failure soon, as i'm in month 4. it's been freezing up a lot and getting disc unreadable errors in all of my games randomly, so i'm guessing it's going to die. if it's like my original xbox it'll die 2 days after the warranty is really up and i'll be SOL.

If I see something with a 90 day warranty I have to assume that they're none too confident about the reliability.

I think the parts suffer from overheating and it wears them down faster than a PC box which has better airflow.

If you are still in the 90 day or 6 month warranty (whatever it is...) and you are worried, just call in to microsoft and pay $30 and get a 1 year service contract.

I'm covered through next august at this point, i think 30 bucks is well spent, much better than 129-139 or even $400

I think I'll be picking up the 2 year contract at $60.

I wonder if the PS3 will have this sort of problem??

prolly the PS2 did...

and the PS3 is using that new chip that noones using anywhere but super high end servers... and an untested blue ray drive that nooen has any idea how well it will stand up to game access...

recipe for failure...

but I'm doign the same thing when i get my box back getting the 2 year on it..
too many people saying they are having repeat fails on refurb boxes.

seems like a recipe for disaster

my guess is yes, it will. the ps2 had issues as well, and the ps3 seems to be packing even more "cutting edge" stuff into a small package.

Just remember with the PS3 you will be using a new technology as the primary drive. That scares the hell out of my considering my PS2 started having disc read errors only a few months after I bought it and my PS1 had to be played upside down. :p
