This morning I get up and check irc and the power went out and came back like 2 minutes later and all was good. My computer freaked out tho. All seemed fine, and actually I dunno if that had anything to do with it.

Bout an our ago, today, Friday, February the 8th of the year 2002 around 11:00 pm my 80gig seagate cudaIV drive died! NNOOOOO!!!!

I was playing UT and it went to load a map and the computer locked... hit reboot and all of a sudden there was no E drive. Check device manager, only 1 harddrive listed. Reboot check bios = no harddrive. Its dead :(.

80 gigs, there was ~500MBs free... over 400 CDs all ripped by me lame YOU KNOW HOW LONG THAT TAKES!? eac + lame with --abr265

omg.

its all gone :(

omfg i can't believe this

omg no, omg everything=gone.

I was messing with linux and bsd lately, so i had moved all my files to the 80gig drive so i could play with the 40gig with different installs until i was happy.... so basically everything is gone. :(

A moment of silence for Becks2k's hard drive. :(

Dead hard drives always suck. How long ago did you buy it? Is the warranty still good? You may have lost your data but you could still get a new drive.

oem drive.. i don't really care bout $150... it took like 60 hours to rip all the cds.

And omfg like 2 days ago I was looking for the cheapest place to buy 100cdrs and wondering the best way to back a harddrive up. For the longest time I had ~40gigs of mp3s and i had them on each drive incase one died.... but then I ran short on disk space and was already short on cash (no new drive) so i figured what are the chances a drive is gonna fail after ~5 months. AHHHHH

I feel your pain - my 40Gb hard drive died last November, it was more or less full of rare bootleg MP3s which had taken me a LONG time to find and collect. Didn't have anything backed up :(

I'm currently re-building my collection (and backing it to CDR this time) - always takes something drastic for you to realise that backups are essential!

I keep a spare harddrive disconnected from my computer. Every 2-3 weeks, I plug it into my computer and backup my mp3's/videos/files ect.. Then I disconnect it and set it back on the shelf. If I had to burn all my stuff on multiple CD's, I think I would go crazy.

I'm assuming you haven't invested in backup or a mirror raid ?

It's cheap enough, hours wasted is enough for a second drive ~150 + raid controller ~ 30-50

I just lost my drive too but I got so many backup, the most I lost is the bookmark from the hour before..

like everyone else said... backing up is crucial! You never know when your HD is going to go. Sorry to hear about the loss.:(

I always run on the assumption that a HD is going to fail. You GOTTA keep backups whether it be another copy on another physical drive, CD-R, or whatnot.

I don't want to turn this discussion into an X is better than Y argument, but I'm not too surprised to hear it was a Segate. In my 5 years of support experience I have seen more Segate drives die than all other brands combined.

just bought a barracuda IV at Fry's (retail "Ikebana" box), 40G, went to format "C" and gave message
"recording current bad clusters" then formatted. Noticed it ran a lot hotter than my other ones. Loaded
Windows, seemed flakey, froze a couple of times, took HDD back, got another - no prob with that one. i
hope this is not a trend.

You might want to check just to make sure that your power supply isn't playing with you. If that hard drive is only on one power lead with nothing else onit then there might be a small chance that it could possiably be a power supply problem or power lead problem. Also make sure to check your ide ribbon cable to make sure that it is all the way plugged in. Next go into bios and make sure that which ever controller you are using is set to auto or what ever. Just double check everything to make sure that it is not something other than a bad drive.

Hi,

I doubt you'd want to spend the big bux to get it recovered, but in all likelyhood it could be done. You could probably check Seagate's site for a list of approved recovery services. I used Reynolds Data Recovery to recover stuff off an 11GB hard drive -- cost about $800 as I recall... (I know, INSANE it is, but...)

CDR's are horrible for backing up modern drives. (It would take me 223 CDRs to back my whole computer up -- and at 8 minutes a pop on my crummy 8x Plextor ... ULGH) Unfortunately, backup systems have not kept up with hard disks.

I do exactly the same thing on my comps. (except I use Ghost and just copy an image of the whole thing every week or so... takes 15 minutes.....)

Srry for the loss man..... tough way to learn the 'back-up yer data lesson" thingy
