Went to BN to check one out and I must say the UI runs like butter. Of course this was on the nook layer but even then the browser is pretty smooth. It is definitely smoother than the silk browser. I'm going to wait a week for a root and then I will most likely exchange my fire for it.

Any idea what the return policy is for the Fire? I got one for myself and my wife. My wife obviously loves it, but I really want the Nook Tablet to hack around with. If I can return a used Fire after a week or so then great, if not, no big deal, I'll let my kids play Angry Birds on it.

I bought mine at best buy today and I have until Jan 23 to return it.

This looks exciting. It has everything you could want. I might reconsider my Transformer 2 purchase.

I just hope this one has the same community support as the first one.

Seems doubtful there will be as large as a community as the Nook Color 1. The NC1 was by far the best value tablet of its era, but when a better value came around (Touchpad) much of the community moved to the best deal. I still expect some level of support, and much of it should be the same so hopefully there is less barriers to cross. With that said NC1 was one of those devices that was just at the right price at the right time for hackers.

Uh, its pretty much a certainty that the Nook Tab will have better community support than the Touchpad. The Touchpad is a dead tablet, whats out in the wild is all there is. They aren't making any more, and whats out there is a tiny fraction of what the Nook Tablet is going to sell on day 1 alone.

Both the Fire and Nook Tab will be seeing community development, but the Nook Tab will get more because of its sd card slot.

I hate that stupid little gay corner, but this puppy has an SD slot and volume buttons. The Fire is lacking both and that may get on my nerves after a bit. Since theres no cellular version I'd like to be able to load it up with movies at home.
May just return it and go for the Nook.

I wonder - given the price - I got the extended warranty on the original Nook Color less than a year ago. I wonder if I can "return it" for the new one...

Supposedly only 1GB of that 16GB is accessible for user storage:

http://liliputing.com/2011/11/bn-nook-tablet-only-provides-1gb-storage-for-your-own-files.html

I'm considering getting a tablet for my fiancee as an XMas gift, looking forward to full reviews on the new devices soon.

That is absolutely horrible. WTF? B&N doesn't even sell movies and music, yet they reserve 15 of the 16 GB of storage to only B&N storage (ie, ebooks)? Ebooks take almost no space. I don't get it, that's crazy. D:

Well if you can Root and ROM it, hopefully that won't matter.

Sales tax kills the deal. That's huge advantage for Amazon on a item that's competing on price. $199 vs $270.

Checked local B&N store and was able to buy one (without a pre-order) today even though the release day is officially tomorrow. Was not on display, but asked the rep there if they were available to buy.
