The latest download allows for the marketplace and a flash based browser.

I rooted mine and I have to saw this is an excellent android based device with nice multi-touch abilities. Lots of options if you go this route.

Android 3.0 is close to being ported on the device no sound yet.

THE LINK MIGHT BE E-BAY BUT THE SELLER IS BARNS AND NOBLE. - Will let moderator decide and go with their decision seems a few say ok others say no.

Deal not so hot now that its manufacturer refurbished.

$225 is good, but its $250 shipped/no tax from barnesnobel, if you want to get it from the 'source' instead of some ebay store.

$200 would definately make it worth it, though...i paid $250 for mine and it's been running 2.2 unofficially off SD since january. great tablet, however, it is slow (and if you overclock it just crashes all the time) and kind of heavy compared to the ipad2.

Yes, it's very different. If you want to know more you can look in our gadget section here or around google. Long story short: these can be altered to be a full blown Android powered tablet.

Anyway... Theres no eBay links allowed here OP. Even if it's the official B&N store. And it's indeed refurbished which makes this a standard price for refurbs from what I've seen. Not really all that hot :\

not bad. if you have the 10% ebay bucks its barely over $200. i have one and it works great with cyanogen 7.0 (i tried the honeycomb rom, which well crashes a lot and is based on the sdk... hopefully google releases the full source soon).

even the standard OS just got an update today to bring it up to froyo with flash support etc.

Watch out for Nook refurbs purchased outside of B&N. they will not honor any warranties. Had this happen to me on a refurb purchased through Overstock. Nook went bad in less than a month. Overstock said go to B&N, B&N said they would not fix it/replace it, I had to go back to Overstock. Fortunately, Overstock gave me a full refund.

Edit: I see that the ebay sale is by B&N, but I thought I should still warn all of you.

finally an honest review about this "tablet". everyone praises this thing like its an ipad competitor and beats it in every category. It is much cheaper, and it does run android, but its not an ipad competitor; its a cheaper and slightly worse alternative.

I'm not a NC fanboy, but the OP said he was running the OS off of the SD card. I bet it would perform so much faster if the OS was installed in main memory...

For half the price of an iPad, the NC holds its own.

TBH, I've been running quite a stable overclock for a while now so that part's just a lie. While it's nowhere near the fluidity of the ipad, for 1/3 the cost it's definitely better bang for your buck. Just depends on what you need it for though and TBH they're in different categories altogether with the screen difference and all.

The Nook is just a shockingly capable e-reader that nobody expected to have any other use. Part of the Nook's success comes from the failures of other Android tablets, but still. It's definitely clunky in comparison to the ipad, but what ISN'T clunky compared to Apple products? That's what they do best.

Just because people like it doesn't mean it's not an honest review. Some people just truly like it that much. I'm running a stable OC right now so as far as I'm concerned the guy you're quoting is less honest than most (or might not know what he was doing... it took me a while to get everything straightened out so I know how easy it is to mess up)

Correct I used autonooter and didnt go to replacing the bios completely because If I wanted to back it its easy. 3.0 is close and since 3.0 is a tablet OS and 2.2 froyo is a phone os I didnt want to over commit.

Huh? The ipad2 is nearly 2x the weight.

It's a very nice android tablet, a little sluggish, but VERY usable. Small enough that my wife keeps it in her purse and FINALLY keeps track of an online calendar with it.

I still haven't found a bulletproof rom though. There is word that Froyo will official come to the Nook Color and hopefully with it a new Autonooter which is what I found to be the most stable, but feature lacking.

The Froyo update went live yesterday.

I love my NC. I primarily bought it as an e-reader, which it excels at. I enjoy the free updates it gives.

I definitely recommend it, it's a nifty and useful device. I store a lot of the pdf research articles I need to read for school on it.

as a pure e-reader it is too heavy, the new kindle is a little bit smaller but much lighter. but after rooted it is an great tablet, light amongst the tablets and yet fully functional. the only short coming seems to be 3d capability, bluetooth and gravity sensor under current cyanogenmod and lack of GPS.

The Nook Color has been given a huge gaming and performance bump with the new optional 1.3GHz kernel. I get 2800+ on a first runs of Quadrant Standard. Games that used to stutter play perfectly now in CM7. Hulu plays fairly well. Bluetooth works in CM7 by the way, I use it almost daily (with a cheap bluetooth GPS and a Wiimote for emulators). The downfall is that bluetooth range is poor, and the CM7 ROM lacks working sleep (even though that will be fixed within a few weeks I think).

I got in on the $200 deal a while back. First one came riddled with stuck pixels. Every exchange came with issues. They were all refurbs some better than others but EVERY SINGLE one had stuck/dead pixels and excessive light bleed from the bottom bezel (I believe each one after the first was a refurb/return).

In the end, I went through several and decided to call it a day and get a refund. I wasted 6 weeks to go through this nonsense. B&N Customer Service did me good though.

On a side not, as someone has already mentioned on this thread, the Nook is too heavy as a pure e-reader (compared to Kindle) and the screen is too reflective outdoors or indoors with a lamp.

As a rooted Nook, it does OK as a simple poor-mans Ipad. Aside of the screen issues, it's a solidly built device.

If you're thinking of buying a refurb, keep in mind that it WILL have pixel issues. It'll be up to you to decide if they are non-obtrusive enough to deal with on a daily basis (Not me!).

Did yours have stuck pixels on a certain color? Mine has what appears to be a dead pixel, but upon further inspection I'm 99.9% it's a speck of dust or plastic. If your pixels were dead it might have been something similar as it seems like their assembly process might not be the cleanest.

honest? sure. Flawed? hell yes.

I have my nook OCed to 1.1ghz without a sweat. No stability issues at all since switching to CM7. Running off SD card will definately slow things down.

Yes. I had dust underneath some screens. Mind you, I went through A LOT of them! This is an issue that has been reported in the past by some.

Since I got refurbs as an exchange (despite Customer Service telling me otherwise), I knew there would be some issue with it. Of course, your mom and pop wouldn't see it, but a techno geek would look for such things. It's all a matter whether these pixel issue are ENOUGH of an issue to make a return/exchange...it was for me (but wouldn't be for my wife, for instance)

I don't know what to take away from this. If most new Nooks have some issue or if most are 100% clean....I'll never know.

Regardless, the thing is heavy and I would be using it to read mostly comic books (the Android stuff was mostly gravy stuff to me). To that end, it was a blessing to switch to my much lighter Kindle when reading a book (sans comics).
