Hello, i am attempting to build my own computer for under £500, i already have a moniter and keyboard, its just the actual hard ware i am concerned about. i have looked into prices and came up with
ATX MIDI tower
AMD Athlon 64 3200, 400 FSB Socket 754 'Newcastle'
Epox EP - 8HDA3 Socket 754 2 x DDR 400 DIMM AGP 8x SATA
Crucial RAM PC 3200 DDR DIMM MB CL3 184 pin
XFX NVIDIA 256 MB FX5500 TV + DVI AGP 8x
Maxtor 120gb Serial ATA (ATA - 150) Dmax +9 7200rpm 8mb cache
Sony DRU - 720a DVD +/- RW
Vantac Thermoflow casefan 80mm
CPU cooler Thermaltec TT-polo 735
An extra IDE cable

This seems to me to be sound, but will anyone just check for me to see if this will actually work? it will be much appreciated

thank you very much

You may want to consider the s939 CPUs instead of the s754, and a suitable mobo.

For the graphics, I'd avoid the 5500 - get the 6600 or better still, the 6800.

Try to buy a larger capacity hard drive - always start out the largest one you can reasonably afford, even if it bumps the price up by 50 pounds (how the hell do I type £ on this Logitech?!!). I'd try finding the Seagate SATA with NCQ. Nothing less than 200GB will do in my book.

Since you're buying fans for the case, get a 120 mm fan, it spins slower and will hence be a lot quieter, while doing an equally good if not better job of cooling.

Assuming this is the same stuff you're going to be putting into the new rig, why are you getting an extra IDE cable? Your mobo will come packaged with a couple.

And hey, welcome to the forums!

the 6600 is still cheap, the fans will be changed thanx
i was told that seperate IDE cables would improve performance? may be not cheers
