ie. I have many CDs (legit, retail ones) that I'd like to put on the Zune -- is it possible to do this, or is it like iTunes where you can't??

Huh? 😕

I hate how these MP3 players won't let you just stick the music on there. I have legit copies of CDs that I can't put on my Zune by dragging and dropping?? So stupid.

EDIT: OK so you can in iTunes, but can you on a Zune?

I'm pretty sure the Zune software rips CDs for you and puts it in your music "collection".

k thanks, anyone else confirm this?

K thank Tallbill, I figured it had to, and like Kadarin said, it would be pretty damned useless if it didn't.

Reason I am asking is it's about $3 total to buy CDs I like on Half.com, so it's much much cheaper than paying $.99 a song to DL. Of course this is only good for whole CDs, but you get my point.

Yeah, zune software rips into mp3's or wmas.

Put CD in.
Clicky cd icon on zune software.
Click rip to collection.

It's the same procedure on just about any media player.

I know I know -- I just hate Apple's software so much and for some reason I didn't think you could because .. well it's a long story but I had a reason

It makes a lot more sense to buy the CD to me. But are you buying these CD's for $0.01, cause shipping itself is $3 IIRC.

Zune does not support FLAC btw.

You can also rip it separately and then import it into the Zune software. That's one thing I really don't like about Zunes. You can't just drag and drop folders onto the device. Zune basically seems like a media player, synchronizer, and store front. I don't need another media player nor the synchronizer or store front. I should have got an iPod or wait for someone to hack the Zune.

I bought my mom a Zune for xmas and the zune software was fairly easy to figure out how to stick in a CD and rip all the tracks within a few minutes and they were on the zune. Even gathered the album art and tagged the tracks. You can then grab and add/remove them from the zune as necessary

And I've never had any trouble ripping a CD with itunes...seemed just as simple...stick a cd in and it detects it and starts ripping.

I feel the same way. I like the device, but I hate being tied to software and have no need for "syncing" anything.

Somebody please hack this little SOB. 🙁

Also .flac is a waste on a portable music player. Of space the of the higher quality.

FLAC is a lossless codec, I was just throwing that out there because someone mentioned it. 😀

I believe the zune supports WMA lossless, which is pretty much the same, all lossless codecs will not sound any different given the same equipment.
