Software forum I know.. I need an answer quick though :p

I'm trying to edit a scan of a $100 bill to place someone's picture in the portrait circle, and I'm not sure exactly how to do it. I figure the easiest way would be to cut out the oval and just put the picture on a seperate layer below the dollar, but I can't figure out how to cut the center out so it's transparent and the lower layer can be seen through it. I'm not sure what tool to use or how to get a nice clean trace around the oval (if it's possible). Can anyone help a noob out please?

The beauty of Photoshop is there's a zillion different ways to accomplish anything.

To cut out the oval shape, I'd use the pen tool and draw some vector paths. You can adjust the paths to perfectly match the contour of the shape. Convert paths to selection and delete (or cut and paste onto a new layer for reference) the president's face.

File > New > Select "Transparent" as Background Contents. Paste dollar image. Remove presidents head with eraser with a small-medium sized brush with 65% hardness and 1pt spacing. Paste the image of the person's head, drag that layer under the dollar layer and move it under the cut out area of the bill.
