noob on wireless?

Is a wireless network slower than a standard ethernet cable hook up? I will be one room over from the wireless reciever and will be connecting via a cable modem. The piece I need is a wireless network card for my machine? Any help is appreciated

It's slower for transferring files but internet speed difference *should* be negligible. (Spelling?)

Wireless networks are slower than hard wire ethernet. That said, the wireless is still way faster than your cable connection so you will not notice a difference in internet speed if you are connected via wireless or hard wire. Now if you copy files between pc's on your network, than you will definitely see a speed increase between wifi and wired.

I do copy files from my labtop to my desktop, but ususally just use a jump drive. Is there any cable that I can run from my labtop to my desktop for just sharing files?

sounds like you have a wireless router. you can set up a workgroup with your pcs even if one is wired and one is wireless. if thats the case, you can get help in the networking forum setting this up if youve never done it before. its not complicated

Even the old 802.11b wireless is faster than most cable connections.

connect them together through the parallel ports with a null modem cable and buy a copy of laplink

802.11b = 11mbps
802.11g = 54mbps

If you have a cable internet provider, you are probably getting ~3mbps. So no, you will not see a speed difference compared to being wired. This is assuming that you have at least a "Good" signal.

ill be in the room next to the router, what do I need to look for in the way of hardware for my desktop? Will any wireless network card work?
