Noob needs help building PC

Hello,

i haven't really been following the hardware trends in the last years and months, so I am pretty clueless as to what's currently a good combination of PC parts. I live in Switzerland and will be buying the parts from here as well, if that makes a big difference in price (usually electronics are pretty cheap here i think). I want to build a high-end gaming pc, with a budget of around 2500-3000 $ or CHF.

This is the shop which i'd probably get most (if not all) of the parts from: https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/tag/pc-components-76

I do NOT have a brand preference and the only part i currently have is a monitor, that i'm using on my laptop right now.

Not sure if i plan on overclocking the PC, but i wouldn't be declined to do so in the future, if that means i can squeeze out enough performance for some more games that will come out.

The resolution i will most likely want to play my games on will be 2560x1440, as i already have a 27" screen like this, and i'm planning to maybe buy another one (with 144hz), but not sure about that yet. Would not be absolutely terrible to set the resolution to 1080p in future titles though.

I'm planning on buying it as soon as possible, but i'm not sure if it's a good idea, since i've heard about the new generation of nvidia gpus coming out very soon (gtx 990 i think?). i was actually thinking about getting a 780 ti as a gpu, but not sure now - same goes for cpus, where i'm pretty clueless as well. I don't want to go below 780 TI performance-wise on GPU and not below 16 GB of RAM.

I don't think i need to buy Windows 8, as I already have it for my laptop (pretty sure i can also use it on the other PC, or not?)

Help would be very much appreciated!

Wrong CPU for overclocking, or 4GHz stock. Here's the right one.

Otherwise, looks like a great build! OP, if you need more power than this, I'd suggest getting a second GTX 970 to SLI.

Thanks Burpo, looks interesting but i was definitely aiming for a little more performance. Didn't want to go below 780 TI performance GPU-wise and not less than 16 GB RAM. Will add these points to my original post.

EDIT: @Ken_g6: I've heard some bad things about SLI, like micro stutter and some driver problems / bad optimization in a lot of games. Wouldn't it be better to get one really powerful GPU instead?

US based info.
According to the retail Windows 8.1 EULA... not.
OEM Windows 8... of course not.

You'll have to check Windows 8 EULA's for your country.

So, you're one of those people who has to get the best (almost) no matter the cost. It is in your budget. GTX 980 and 16GB RAM, then.

A new Win8 license is too. There's a small chance you could transfer, but not copy, Win8 from one machine to another legally, but why bother?

Just going to push this thread. Thinking of waiting until January 2015 (for GTA 5 release), but i'm not sure if it's worth it. Do you think prices will drop significantly / anything new will be released until January 15?

i7 4790K
Corsair 760T
Corsair H100i
16GB (2x8) DDR3 2133 Cas9
GTX 980 4GB
2TB WD Caviar Black HDD
1TB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
EVGA Supernova PSU (select a wattage based on whether you will SLI in future or not)
Bluray/DVDRW (optional)

You will 100% have to buy a retail or OEM copy of Win 8.1

I sometimes buy the best mother board for gaming with a low or medium range cpu so I can always upgrade it if need be
