Hey. I built my first computer a few weeks ago and I decided I needed to go bigger in empty disk space. Well when I put the first HDD in the instructions stated that since I was only using one drive at the time I didn't even have to put the socket thing in that said it was a master or slave. but now I have two Western Digital IDE 80GB HDDs. So I went to connect the 'MS' or "Master" Switch thing into the first HDD that was already into the computer. Then I put a switch on the "SL" or Slave on the newer HDD.. And no luck. There is a CS connector spot on the HDD but the instructions dont tell you what that is..

Any ideas why my computer is playing with my mind? Please speak noobish to me because it's been a while since I've talked 'computer' heh, thanks a lot guys.

CS = Cable select. It will try and assign itself baser on its position on the cable. The FIRST connector in the slave the SECOND is the master(master is on the end)

On any mobo made in the last 2 or 3 years, use CS on all drives and it'll work fine. Otherewise Western Digital drives are fussy. There's TWO master settings: Master with Slave and Single Master.

It;'s just easier to use CS.

Some old Intel boards were unable to use a single drive as Slave - however, other boards were perfectly fine with this setting.

So.. set BOTH HDDs to CS? After that is done, should my computer recognize both drives? Just making sure, because I only want to take apart my computer this one time heh. Thanks again

should work if there are any problems with that configuration should be stated in your HD documentation.

Just realize the more you take it apart the better you will get at it;)

I actually want to build computers for a living.. But I am only 17.. Built two computers (Exact model, all parts identicle). I am no pro however heh.. but I want to know how to build them as a sidejob any day I can.. To help out a friend and whatnot.. Still can't figure out which LEDs go where without looking at a mobo manual though.. yea anyway, back to topic.. once I get home tonight, i will try it.

I tried it.. Since I lost the 'plug' or jumper that you plug into the CS area on the HDD.. I lost it on my first HDD since I didn't have to use any for just one HDD. So when i got my new one, it came with two a white and black one. I connected 1 jumper to the new HDD and 1 jumper to the older HDD (Both are Western Digitals remember), both were connected into the CS port.. and I just rebooted my computer.. nothing is working.. I still have a C:/ Drive with all of that data, but no new drive..

WD drives have a stranger way of selecting drive type. Look on the WD site for description (or on the drive - it might be written somewhere)
