Is there a superior architecture in the current graphics processors? I don't know anything about video cards, I just want something that offers superior performance and with as little extra features as possible.
 
Newer architecture is pretty much always better (exception: AMD Bulldozer CPUs).

What kind of gaming is it for - resolution, what games? How much are you willing to pay? Are you buying it now? Where are you buying from?
 
Amd just announced their next gen high end gpu, the 7970. They haven't given a firm launch date on their other next fen offerings, however, and we need your system specs and favorite games before we can recommend a specific card.
