Noob game question - Does this type of game exist?

I'm somewhat new to gaming.

I own the following three games:

Baldur's Gate
Icewind Dale
Medal of Honor Allied Assualt.

I'm building a new system this weekend that will include a AMD 64 3000+ and GeForce 6600 VC. So I think I've got the power to handle just about any new game.

I'd like a new game to celebrate my new system, but I don't know what's out there.

I really enjoyed the Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale games. I love that D&D genre and building/advancing your character(s).

But I also really enjoyed MOHAA and the game environment and engine.

Is there a game out there that combines the two? Is there a game out there that's a combo of an RPG and FPS?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Also, I'm not interested in multi-player. See, I'm a pretty busy CPA and I'm 35 years old. The last thing I want to do at the end of the day (the only time I get to play) is log on and get my ass kicked by some teenager who does nothing but game for 18 hours a day.

Thanks!

Tough. But sounds like Deus Ex/Deus Ex 2 would be your cup of tea. The new Elder Scrolls game would also be fitting, but there's no shooting, and it's far from being on store shelves.

Congrats on new system. All this has just made me realize that my A64 is more than 1 year old already. Seems like I built it yesterday...

I'm not sure of any that combine the two genres, but if you enjoyed the game environment and engine of MOHAA, then you should absolutely love the same about Half Life 2. I know, I know, it's an easy choice, but HL2 has some of the most immersive environments ever conceived in a video game IMO, and the Source engine as a whole that runs it is fantastic.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Pick up the first one for cheap, not the recent one (unless you just want to). It's a D20 based system (the current paper and pencil D&D rules) with plenty of action and lots of character leveling. It's not an FPS, but it's an "over the shoulder" view, like you're the main character's conscious. I'm a 33 year old civil engineer and I find it's just about right for an hour a night or maybe two.

+1

KOTOR is definitely one of the best games I've ever played; once you start, you'll be compelled to finish. I have yet to try out KOTOR2.

Another games worth considering for that new system is Far Cry.

Really is fun and you will love the graphics.

When I read your thread, I was thinking Morrowind, Gothic2, and, more recently, Dungeon Lords (coming out soon). These are all RPG games with FPS viewpoints / graphics.

The Baldur's Gate games for the Xbox and PS2 might fit the bill, but I don't know of many PC games that others haven't already mentioned.

I really appreciate all of your replies! Thank you.

Silent Storm definitely looks like something I would enjoy.

So does KOTOR, as I love Star Wars stuff too.

But Morrowind, Gothic2, and Dugeon Lords sound exactly like what I was thinking of.

Now....I've got to decide which one to get first!

So many fun games....so little time.

Again, thank you all for your suggestions.

I second Far Cry, very immersive environment, its a little weak on the story line but the rest of the game forgives its weaknesses. Overall a great game and I really enjoyed it. If you have surround sound its even better, the awesome sound effects and huge outdoor levels really added to the complete sensation of literally being IN the game.

My favorite kind of game!

There aren't many of these. Don't know why. But, Dues Ex and System Shock 2 are combination FPS/RPG. They're old, so the gfx is not fantastic like Far Cry. But they were "Games of the Year" in their day

May I suggest that you try to find these oustanding award winning games and play them b4 you get used to good graphics.

When I started gaming a few years ago, I first went and looked up the past award winning games. One benefit is that they are all patched up and working, plus they can be had for about $10

Oops, one complication. may have to put win98se on there to play 'em. Not sure, I usually keep a dual boot with win98se and win2k pro sp4. I don't use XP at all. But, I do hear winXP can emulate win98se for old games.

Otherwise Star Wars Kights of the Old Republic (KoTOR) is good.

BTW, I'm a tax CPA too :)

Thanks for the post Fern (helping me out again....good karma to you!).

I had a few minutes this afternoon to look at a few of the suggestions made in this thread. Morrowind looks cool to me.

I'll check out Dues Ex and System Shock. You make a good point that these games are older and can be purchased fairly cheap.

You also make a good point of playing these games first before newer games! Unfortunately, the graphics card I ordered (arriving tomorrow), the Leadtek GeForce 6600 comes with Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell. While neither of these games jumps out at me as "I've just got to play them!", I know I'll probably load 'em up to see the graphics.

Good to know there are other CPAs browsing the forums. I hope tax season is going smoothly for you. I'm actually a financial reporting guy working for a publicly traded financial services company. I just filed my SEC Form 10-K, so it's all downhill for me (until next month when it's time to file the 10-Q :().

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Splinter Cell has its great moments. Though I've only played the XBOX version, the game is very cool (though some of the missions may seem to be incredible difficult). Definitely a play-worthy game, especially since you got it in a graphics card bundle (so you already paid for it).

Since there is another thread about it and it reminded me of it, try Wolfenstein: ET. It's completely free to download, and it's an FPS with experience and levels. It is multiplayer though, and I know you said you don't want that, but this game is pretty easy to get into. Try out the field op, he can call in air strikes, you don't have to worry so much about dying then :p

Do you only like character building, or do you like interaction with NPCs and such as well? Deus Ex is a FPS/RPG (and a great one at that) but there are very few skill points, as its main focus on roleplaying elements is on interaction. The System Shock games are the opposite, with insane amounts of skills but no characters to talk with at all. You should also check out the Lands Of Lore Trilogy and Strife.

Far Cry is pretty much the farthest from roleplaying you can get. It's a great shooter, but there's no skill points, almost no storyline, and like two characters who you rarely even see.

Splinter Cell is way too linear to be an RPG, and way too stealth oriented to be a real shooter.

Wow, looks like we have the world's leading authority on PC gaming here. :)

I only brought up Splinter Cell because rivethead brought up the fact that he got that in a vid card bundle. I own the game, I have played the game, I know its linear, I know its stealth oriented.

Plus, suggestions, all suggestions. Splinter Cell and Far Cry may not fit his exact criteria, but I bet he's looking for a fun game to play, and both are.

More votes for Morrowind, Deus Ex 1, and KOTOR I and II.

Also, if you copy all of Deus Ex to your hard drive and make some changes in the Duesex.ini file, you can play it entirely off your HD.

So, rivethead, what did you get? Also, I thought of No One Lives Forever 2. It's an FPS with skills that improve over the course of the game. It's not long on the role playing, though.

KOTOR is an excellent suggestion.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned World of Warcraft. I don't know how much you'd consider it a FPS, but you can play in first person, and you can shoot a gun. ;)

WoW is a phenominal game, best RPG ever, imho. Especially for us old guys with a life who don't have a ton of time.
