I just made some travel reservations, and was unable to choose my seat for one of my flights... To make sure there was no problem, I called the airline and they said 25% of the seats are under airline control and they cannot be delegated until I arrive.

Can someone translate that for me?

Airlines frequently overbook flights. When you don't have a seat, you're basically flying standby. Just try to show up a little early to checkin and you'll be fine.

Airlines that still offer assigned seating save nicer seats for their frequent fliers and such, on the day of the flight, the leftover seats open up to on a first-come first-serve basis, usually just asking the at the check-in counter will get you one. In your case, you will probably get one of the crappy seats that a frequent flier was 'upgraded' from. ;)

My suggestion, check in online as early as you can, then when you get to the airport, ask at the counter if there are any better seats available.

The translation is "Make sure you don't have plans immediately after the flight".

Make sure to learn how to schmooze your way into better seats... the past few times I've flown I've been able to talk my way into business class/extended coach.

you'll be able to pick it at check-in, then. try to check-in as early as possible. usually check-in opens 24 hours in advance of the flight.
