Non-USB SmartMedia readers

I can't download pictures from my camera because my USB ports seem to not function. So, instead of buying some sort of USB port add-on card, I thought getting a smartmedia reader would make more sense. Unfortunately I've only seen readers which are external and connect to the USB port, making them useless to me.

Are there are smartmedia reader cards?

There are ide based media readers.

Do all your USB ports not work? Have they ever worked?

I started another thread on this earlier, but they used to work but haven't for a long time now. Long story short I'm a lazy man who hasn't worked on computers for well over a year, and if something like an IDE reader you mentioned was available for a relatively low price I think I'd just go with it.

My digicam actually came with a smartmedia adapter that is read by your floppy drive. Downside is it required drivers to install (since usually a floppy is much smaller, I suppose) and used a battery as well. Just in the far out options department. ^^

There are also PCMCIA S/M readers - I have one for my notebook. There are also IDE PCMCIA adapters - and that would bridge those devices.

Actually, the cheapest and best solution is one you seem to have rejected - add a USB 2 PCI card. COuld it be that your motherboard's USB ports are turned off in BIOS or by jumper?

you can get a USB 2.0 PCI card for $20 at any local bestbuy or staples.

you can use your reader that way AND actually have USB again.

If your external ports are broken, you could get one of those 6 in 1 media readers and plug it into an internal USB port if available.
