So I have a DFI P965-S motherboard that's been running an E2140. I bought an E8400, in hopes of a substantial performance upgrade.
I know this is a much newer cpu, so I checked that the board supported it. According to the DFI site, the 2nd to newest BIOS supports the cpu, the newest, supporting the newer E0 stepping. My E8400 is C0, and I am running the 2nd newest BIOS.
It posts fine, I dual-boot Win7 RC and OS X. OS X I can boot in but it quickly and eventually crashes/restarts. With Win7, I can't even get past the loading screen before it does the same.
My first thought was that it'd be the ram, seeing as it can be tricky to insert because the clips no longer "click" when inserted. I've tried re-seating them many times, with no change.
Other notes on my setup: I disable every cpu feature in BIOS but Execute Disable Bit and Virtualization. I set my own DRAM speed (to 667) as well as timings, to spec with what my ram's manufacturer suggests. I've tried clearing the CMOS several times. I don't think it's the ram anymore, and am seriously considering that there is some compatibility issue here. Anyone have any input? What other issues can I rule out? Nothing else has changed, hardware wise. The E8400 @ stock uses less power than the E2140 OC'ed, so it's not power requirements.
Thanks in advance, in the meantime, I will try updating the BIOS to the last version available.
Edit: In looking at other motherboards, I found something interesting:
That this other motherboard would have strange restarts if the 8-pin connector wasn't plugged in with an 8-pin plug from the PSU. What I've always done with the E2140 is plugged the 4pin plug from the PSU (my psu doesn't have 8pin plug), into the 8pin connector on the motherboard (a common solution), could this be the issue? Do I need an adapter now with the new cpu? Going to give it a shot and will report back.
Edit 2: Tried an Apevia P4 to P8 adapter, and no luck. Back at square 1.
Edit 3: Bios update did almost nothing, as expected, this time I was able to see the Win7 mouse arrow beginning to load before crashing =P. Will try going back to the E2140 as bamacre suggested.
Last Edit: I swapped the old cpu back in, and computer is fine now. I guess the mobo just doesn't like the Wolfdale cpu, maybe it's an early revision? Even though bios claims support.
