non-responding applications in XP

I randomly get the following problem in XP:

I start an application and the application loads. But the colors of the application appear a bit faded; worse, the application doesn't respond to any keyboard or mouse clicks.

It can only be shut down by windows task manager. If I start up the application again, it works okay. But later on at another startup of the application it can freeze again the same way.

I've noticed no pattern and it has happened with IE, control panel, Word, and others.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
