Couple of questions about non iron dress shirts...

1) Do they really stay wrinkle free after a wash?
2) Are they breathable during the summer?
3) Are they worth it?

Brooks Brothers makes awesome non-iron shirts.

You're supposed to dry them and hang them up immediately. They come out pretty much wrinkle free. I always run an iron over them in the mornings though, just to make them crisp!

Edit: The fabric is thicker than say Clairborne or Geoffery Beane

The Brooks Brothers ones really are remarkable IMO. They are a nice thick, soft 100% cotton material. yet they retain creases amazingly well. I have no idea what the underlying technology is, but I like 'em. The only downside I see is that they seem to fray more quickly than other dress shirts, but considering the fact that I essentially save $3 every time I wear one (since I can machine wash them rather than taking them to the cleaners) they are still highly cost-effective. The frayed ones still look nice under a sweater IMO.

Part of the key to eliminating as many wrinkles as possible is to go right to the dryer after the washing machine.........(i.e. don't let the wash load sit in the washer overnight).........and then, yes, out of the dryer right away.

I have not been able to convince my wife that my shirts need to be hung up immediately, it's a constant source of irritation.

I got some wrinkle-free shirts from Jos A Bank recently and I like them a lot. They have ads on their site and in-store saying they're the top rated wrinkle-free dress shirts per the Wall Street Journal.

Jos A Bank Site

They're about the same as a Brooks Brothers though. $75 is about what you'll pay for a decent quality non-iron dress shirt.

I get mine from Jos A Bank, too. I have several that have been washed 75-100 times. They aren't as crisp as when they were new, but they don't need ironing.

If you wait for sales, you can get them at half price. $37.50 for a shirt of this quality is a good buy.

As I said, though, most men who wear dress shirts for work will take them to the cleaners when they aren't non-iron. A BB shirt is, IMO, fairly priced even when you disregard the non-iron-ness, but let's say you compare it to a $50 Macy's house-brand shirt (they are much better in quality than anything less expensive than that). You will save the difference in 8 wearings, since you aren't paying $3 to have the shirt laundered everytime you wear it. I used to wash my own dress shirts whnen I was in high school and college, but now that I actually work for a living I can't be bothered (obviously YMMV).

If you want a cheap non-iron dress shirt the Croft and Barrow ones from Kohls are good for the price.

Just hang your shirt up after drying it and you don't need to iron and it won't wrinkle regardless of whether it is non-iron or not.

There's an BB outlet store here and the shirts are about 1/2 price. Not sure how many BB outlet stores there are though.

another vote for brooks brothers wrinkle-free shirts. they have a sale every once in a while where you can get 3 shirts for $150.

i have 6 of them and i wash them every week, ever since i bought them in june last year. only 1 has started to fray and it is near the buttons so it is covered by the buttonhole side of the shirt.

best shirt purchase i've ever made. wash, dry, hang, no wrinkles, crisp creases. remarkable.

apart from wrinkled shirts, the other thing that looks awful on guys is over-sized dress shirts, or dress shirts made with an excess of fabric around the waist, so that the waist billows out and makes the guy look fat. A tapered, trim fit looks a zillion times better (unless of course you really are fat).

NON Wrinkle free shirts will be ok if you hang it up asap, but there are still wrinkles. It's fine to wear but it's not gonna be as good as one if you just ironed it. And it will be FAR from a wrinkle free shirt.

They'll probably wrinkle if you squeeze it into a ball, but typical wash and dry, it will be fine. Just don't be one of those idiots who transports everything from the washer into the dryer without at least separating clothes prying them apart from the small wrinkled ball they're in.

I wear all cotton, or cotton blend dress shirts. I can't relate to the problem. My cleaner comes to my office and picks up all my dry cleaning and shirts, on friday, then delivers them back to me on Monday. The service runs me about $1.25 per shirt, and $2.50 per slack, for my dry cleaning. I usually tip the guy a $20 bill for the delivery and pickup. :)
