I'd like to play around with adding linux to a drive on my machine and making it dual booting. The goal is to become more familiar with Linux and linux apps.

Was wondering if someone could recommend a variant that I can download and install for free that is relatively user friendly and will run decently on the following machine?

Linux to be installed on a 7.5 GB drive D: Quantum Bigfoot TX8.0AT
Windows XP Pro SP2 is on C: which is a 37 GB drive.
1.0 GHz AMD Athlon Processor
256 MB RAM
Old 1x CD-ROM drive
GeForce II MX AGP card
Netgear FA311 PCI network adapter
Cheap old sound card that shows up as Crystal SoundFusion in device manager

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ubuntu is a good choice, considering your system specs.

I've also found opensuse to be very intuitive and easy to use.
