Non-Diamond Engagement Ring

Is it possible to come up with one?

I'm sure I'm going to take some flack for this, but she's cool with not getting a diamond, and I'd prefer not to buy a diamond or diamond alternative. Also I'm poor, so budget is $1000 or less

What ever makes you two happy.

I dont think my buddy got his wife a diamond. Or anything at all for that matter now that I think about it...

Birthstone FTW.

Also, if she's down with the "downpayment on a house > sparklies" line of thought, you've got a keeper. 😉

and if she's an april baby 😛

She is. I'm still working up to the actual asking, just getting comfortable with the idea of making it forever. We've been cohabitating in sin for some time, so there should'nt be too many big surprises.

I was looking at birthstones, but having trouble finding one that really looked like a decent engagement ring. I read about an old tradition of a ring with 6 stones, 3 on either side, one side is the groom's and his parent's birthstones, the other side the brides, but I don't know if that's going to be ugly or not and I can't seem to find them anywhere anyway. I've heard antiques can be nice if you're avoiding the diamond, but I've mostly just been shopping online, I probably need to hoof it into an actual jewelry store, but I'm usually expecting to get taken advantage at any B&M anymore when compared to online prices.

March unfortunately. Which is AquaMarine, I was looking at Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald as they are at least a little more recognizable. She's not big on gold so it'll be white gold or silver.

Yes it is doable. I would not do a birthstone ring simply because i think some people don't like their birthstone anyways.
I think for an engagement ring, it would be BEAUTIFUL if you got an emrald cut aquamarine ring with perhaps small diamonds on the sides.
Aquamarine is very pale blue, people think it is like topaz but it is not. (topaz is only a semi-precious stone).
It will be classic and elegant!

That's actually a really good idea. Small diamond clusters are cheap.

Or you can just delve into the world of stolen jewels. 😀

Maybe if you give her a HUGE hunk of coal mounted on a ring you can convince her that it will be worth something if she keeps it long enough.

But, I'm guessing if you do that, she won't hold onto you long enough for you to find out. Go with a diamond.

I third the Aquamarine flanked by diamonds suggestion. Aquamarines - if you dont skimp can be very beautiful, and the diamonds on the side would enhance the color of the aquamarine.

Plus, another great thing about an aquamarine stone is that it is not garrish. I personally love diamonds because they are white. They go with anything. I love aquamarine because it is such a lovely pale blue it can go with anything too. 🙂

yes... like this one: look. simple, classic, yet not gaudy. I honestly would love this ring personally.

That is nice. The band seems a little thick to me though. The Aquamarine actually is her birthmonth, March. I was thinking of spending more than that though, but I suppose the main thing is to find a nice looking ring. I know a lot of people on here have good places online to buy diamonds etc, with other jewels am I going to do ok online or should I start hitting up the jewlers of Kentucky?

Also - I'm trying to avoid diamonds altogether, the expense as well as the politics are reasons although I'm hoping to avoid a debate about it in here. I understand that what I would be buying isn't exactly a drop in the bucket of the diamond trade, and will make not difference, but I am hoping ot avoid buying them. Probably foolish, and I will probably have to compromise and include a few small diamonds.

I've looked at that.

A down payment on a house seems alot smarter than a fancy ring and a nice wedding. I'm sure my g/f would disagree, though.

Crap! Just remembered that our siblings might have screwed us here.

My brother and his wife had a cheap reception at a public pavillion for all of the family, bbq and what not, and then got married on the beach in hawaii at sunrise on the first day of their honeymoon.

Her older sister eloped as well, having a dinner for the family before she went. Her dad offered it to her, he said he could pay for the wedding or just give her a check and she could elope.

I'm worried both sides are going to expect more ceremony. Gonna have to start punching family members during the planning stages.

Cripes, remind me to have you around when I go and get a ring! Excellent advice. 🙂
